Data: The amount of cryptocurrency lost to ransomware in 2022 was approximately 20% of last year's total
ChainCatcher news, blockchain analysis company Crystal Blockchain stated that, according to statistics, the total amount of cryptocurrency paid to hackers due to ransomware incidents in 2022 was only $16 million, compared to nearly $74 million in 2021.
Cybersecurity researchers say that this data may be surprising given the increase in ransomware attacks since 2021. This year, the Conti ransomware group, known for terrorizing U.S. hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic, ceased operations, but new groups continue to emerge.
However, Nick Smart, Director of Blockchain Intelligence at Crystal, stated that it may still be too early to conclude that ransomware attacks are permanently decreasing. "Since the Conti leak, we have been able to gather more information about historical ransomware and extortion activities, meaning we have a better understanding of previous situations. Due to the way ransoms operate, and many companies not publicly disclosing payment information, it is now impossible to understand exactly what is happening with ransomware activities." (source link)
