Zug, Switzerland --- January 31, 2023 --- Energy Web is proud to participate in OPENTUNITY, a new EU-funded initiative aimed at enhancing distributed energy interoperability to accelerate grid decarbonization, alongside 21 partners from 8 countries in Europe. Under this initiative, Energy Web is providing the underlying digital infrastructure for data exchange among the consortium of companies involved in OPENTUNITY.
OPENTUNITY aims to unlock the deep flexibility of distributed energy by eliminating data silos and establishing data exchange standards, all focused on creating value for end customers. More specifically, the initiative focuses on enabling producers and consumers, as well as other market participants, to more easily provide demand flexibility to grid operators.
Partners under the initiative are focused on conducting 13 demonstration projects using a common underlying digital infrastructure. These demonstration projects aim to test hypotheses and demonstrate the value of various technologies and business use cases with a common theme: that properly integrating distributed energy with the grid can create value for end customers and energy market participants.
These demonstrations will take place in four different EU countries: Greece, Slovenia, Spain, and Switzerland. Preliminary estimates predict that the innovative potential unlocked through OPENTUNITY could reduce energy costs for end customers by 30%, primarily by making distributed energy resources a core part of grid planning and operation. In Greece, Slovenia is at 4.98 cts/kWh, Spain at 6.9 cts/kWh, and Switzerland at 6 cts/kWh.
