The heir of Cartier jewelry was arrested for money laundering using USDT
ChainCatcher news, according to Protos, the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) has charged and arrested the heir of the jewelry brand Cartier, Maximilien de Hoop Cartier, on charges of allegedly using USDT for money laundering, with funds originating from drug trafficking. In Miami, law enforcement arrested Maximilien de Hoop Cartier, a direct descendant of Louis Cartier, who is the founder of the luxury watch, necklace, and bracelet manufacturer. It is alleged that Maximilien de Hoop Cartier colluded with Colombian drug cartels.
In addition to five Colombian nationals, Cartier also attempted to import 100 kilograms of cocaine and launder hundreds of millions of dollars, primarily through over-the-counter (OTC) USDT transactions. They had actually successfully laundered $14.5 million in USDT before their arrest. Currently, Cartier is being held at the Miami Detention Center, while his accomplices are detained in Colombian prisons.
To carry out his scheme, Cartier controlled shell companies and falsely claimed to financial institutions that these companies were engaged in software and technology businesses. According to the indictment, he then used the accounts of these companies as unauthorized currency transfer intermediaries. Cartier laundered hundreds of millions of dollars in criminal proceeds using USDT, dollars, pesos, and other currencies.
