The U.S. CFTC recovers $18 million in digital assets

2024-09-04 08:57:59

ChainCatcher News: The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has successfully recovered $18 million in digital assets related to an alleged commodity pool Ponzi scheme.

Oregon man Sam Ikkurty is accused of defrauding investors through a so-called "cryptocurrency hedge fund," promising to return "net profits" but failing to deliver, even concealing the fact that the fund's performance had dropped by 98.99% over several months.

The CFTC stated that Ikkurty violated his promise by investing in unstable digital assets, and his claimed expertise in cryptocurrency was also false.

U.S. District Judge Mary Rowland of the Northern District of Illinois ordered Ikkurty and related entities to pay a total of $209 million, including customer restitution, forfeiture of ill-gotten gains, and civil penalties.
