Citi: Trump's 90-day "stay" on tariffs may not be as helpful as it sounds
ChainCatcher news, Citigroup analyst Andrew Hollenhorst stated in a research report that Trump's 90-day suspension of higher tariffs on most countries "is not as helpful as it sounds." "The suspension does not include reciprocal tariffs from certain countries, which does not mean that the U.S. economy has avoided a slowdown in growth and rising inflation," said the chief U.S. economist.
He noted that the 10% baseline tariff, along with an additional 125% tariff on most goods from certain countries and tariffs targeting specific industries, has raised the average effective tariff in the U.S. by about 21 percentage points compared to early 2025 levels. He added, "The uncertainty in trade will persist."
