CNBC: U.S. Customs says new tariff policy has generated $500 million in revenue, but far below Trump's expectations

2025-04-17 00:53:19

ChainCatcher news, according to CNBC, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) stated: "Since April 5, CBP has collected over $500 million under the new reciprocal tariffs, bringing the total tariff revenue from 15 presidential trade actions implemented since January 20, 2025, to over $21 billion."

This latest statement was released following a 10-hour financial system outage. During the outage, U.S. importers were unable to input a code that could have exempted goods already in transit from higher tariffs. Even during the brief system failure, the average daily revenue stream of $250 million for CBP remained uninterrupted.

Trump has repeatedly stated that the U.S. collects $2 billion in revenue daily from tariffs. However, the latest data released by the Treasury Department on Monday showed that the daily deposits under "Customs and Specific Excise Taxes" were only $305 million that day. All tariffs are collected by U.S. Customs at the point of entry.
