ChainCatcher news, according to the Anti-Tariff Declaration website, a number of well-known economists, including two Nobel laureates in economics, have jointly issued a statement opposing the large-scale unilateral tariff measures implemented by the Trump administration through executive orders since taking office in 2025.

The statement criticizes the policy for repeating the protectionist mistakes of the Smoot-Hawley Act of 1930, distorting the market, harming consumer interests, and violating the principles of free trade and constitutional governance.

The statement calls for a return to the founding values of "peace, commerce, and honest friendship," and the current "Anti-Tariff Declaration" has received support from over 1,368 scholars and policymakers.
