Model Context Protocol (MCP) that even kindergarten grandpas can understand
I am BitRay Ray.bit, a man full of passion for Bitcoin and technical insights, X (Twitter): ++https://x.com/bitlaser_btc++
Recently, every time I open my phone, it's filled with various AI news, leaving me quite confused, especially about "ModelContextProtocol" (abbreviated as MCP). I don't understand it at all, and I can't keep holding onto my AI concept coins and crying over them. $GOAT, $AI16Z, and $ACT have tied up so much of my funds, and this time I want to get it all back. So, I used my big brain to study MCP thoroughly, and guess what? I really figured it out. It's no wonder that big brother @cz_binance said that AI focuses on practicality. Previously, AI was basically stuck at the level of conversation, auto-tweeting, and underlying technical support, which we found completely useless. It turns out that MCP is the future of AI.
Now, I present the results of my three days and nights of tireless research for review by all the married and unmarried brothers and sisters, hoping even our grandpas in kindergarten can understand.
Chapter One: What is MCP? The "Universal Plug" of the AI World
On November 25, 2024, an AI company called Anthropic @AnthropicAI (which developed the Claude intelligent model) launched MCP. Simply put, MCP is like a "universal plug" that allows AI to easily connect to external data and tools, such as company reports, website content, WEB3 wallets, and even the calendar on your phone.
Imagine your grandpa (not an insult) asking the smart speaker, "What do I have planned for today?" But the speaker can't understand the calendar and can only respond, "I don't understand what you're saying." With MCP, it would pop up and "translate," "You promised Auntie Eight this morning to take her for some soy milk, and the carriage is all ready for you" (just kidding, don't take it personally), allowing AI to find the answer directly.
Then your grandpa (not an insult) says, "Speaking of Auntie Eight, help me buy eight Ethereum with my Binance wallet" (indirectly promoting Binance wallet @binancezh, no offense to sister @heyibinance). And indeed, the wallet helped grandpa make the purchase. AI not only talks but also gets the job done, better than some XX. It's that magical.
In the past, connecting AI to this data required writing a bunch of complex code. Now, with MCP, developers just need to plug in this "plug" to make AI smarter and more considerate.
Anthropic says MCP is open-source, and anyone can use it for free, even improve it. This has excited many programmers, who believe it could be the "standard configuration" for the future of AI.
Tip 1: MCP is like giving AI a "second brain," enabling it to understand more data.
Chapter Two: How Did MCP Come About? The Story Begins with the AI Boom of 2023
To understand why MCP is so important, we need to talk about the AI explosion of 2023. That year, OpenAI's ChatGPT became popular, and the whole world started using AI to write articles, create art, and chat. But problems arose: while AI was smart, it couldn't see the data in your hands, like company sales records or family photo albums.
The team at Anthropic—a group of big shots who came from OpenAI—said this was unacceptable. So, they spent years researching and finally launched MCP at the end of 2024. This thing not only allows AI to "see" more data but also ensures safety, preventing bad actors from stealing privacy.
(Quick interjection: At this time, my Web3 AI assets were shrinking and shrinking, leaving me in tears, and I still feel the pain to this day. End of interjection.)
The release of MCP coincided with a high point for Anthropic: in 2024, they secured billions of dollars in investments from Google and Amazon, making MCP a hot topic right out of the gate, like a supernova entering a new world.
Tip 2: MCP is the "savior" of the AI boom, solving a major problem—making AI understand your life better than you do.
Chapter Three: What Can MCP Do? AI Magic That Even Grandpa Can Use
The beauty of MCP lies in its simplicity, allowing even non-tech-savvy grandpas to feel its benefits. When Anthropic released MCP, they also launched an application called ClaudeDesktop, allowing everyone to experience it directly.
For example, grandpa asks Claude, "What was I supposed to buy recently? (Seems like a question for the queen, but that's not important)." Previously, Claude might have only said, "I don't understand what you're saying" (here we go again). But with MCP, Claude can connect to grandpa's shopping app through this protocol and immediately tell him he needs to buy a floral jumpsuit—without grandpa lifting a finger!
Grandpa was thrilled and very satisfied, deciding to wear it to the next Web3 consensus conference.
Developers can do even more with MCP, such as:
- Using simple code (like Python) to connect AI to company tools;
- Quickly building a smart assistant with ready-made MCP tools;
- Even designing new ways for AI to help grandpa plan yoga classes or manage household chores, or even help grandpa trade some coins.
Anthropic has placed the MCP code on GitHub, allowing anyone to download and try it out, eliminating information gaps worldwide and attracting developers globally.
Tip 3: MCP is like an "AI magic wand," allowing grandpa to enjoy a smart life.
Chapter Four: What Will the Future of MCP Look Like? The Next Big Event in the AI World?
When MCP was first launched, everyone was guessing: could it become the "passport" of the AI world? After all, Anthropic has the backing of Google and Amazon, while competitors like Microsoft (supporting OpenAI) and Google (with its own Gemini) are also eyeing this field.
Some believe that MCP might become as essential as WiFi in our phones, slowly turning into a "standard configuration" for AI. In the future, developers might use it to create more smart tools, allowing even grandpa to use AI to plan trips, order takeout, or even video chat with his grandkids.
However, some are concerned: MCP is still new, and there may be security and compatibility risks. Anthropic promises to keep improving it, ensuring it remains as reliable and excellent as Claude.
Tip 4: MCP could be the future star of AI, but it still needs time to prove itself.
Chapter Five: What Happens When MCP Enters the Web3 World? Cold Water in Hot Oil?
As of today, AI's popularity in Web3 remains high, yet no dominant projects have emerged, with most dropping by 90% or even 99%. It's fair to say that many tools are merely dressed in AI's clothing—unpractical and not smart. Big brother has stated that none have caught his eye.
MCP, however, stands out for its practicality, and it has countless possibilities.
Base @base has already provided MCP Server, and the BNB Chain @BNBCHAIN and Solana @solana communities have also offered MCP Server, making MCP a definite trend for future development.
There are rumors that the plummeting of $GOAT, $AI16Z, and $ACT is due to the explosive popularity of MCP. This is just a mention, not a judgment, so let's return to the countless possibilities.
For example:
Grandpa could roar and directly enter Web3, with AI providing everything he needs in Web3 (except for funds; don't expect free money from the sky).
Grandpa shouts he wants to buy BTC, and AI immediately buys him 21 million $BTC. (You might say that's too much; I'm just using it as an example, don't take it too seriously.)
If grandpa sees a KOL shouting about a certain token, he can ask AI to review the contract. If there are no bugs, he can invest $20 million and keep a close eye on the top guy, ready to act before he dumps the token, so grandma won't worry about him getting backstabbed.
Tip 5: MCP will change the existing AI landscape in Web3, developing in a more practical direction and providing a one-click secure connection between Web2 and Web3.
Epilogue
In the past year, the changes in the AI field have been rapid, and the emergence of MCP has opened everyone's eyes. Due to my limited imagination, I can't visualize all the infinite possibilities that MCP can create. In other words, whatever you think is possible.
Although AI sounds profound, I hope this little essay can help everyone, even our grandpas in kindergarten, understand the significance of MCP.
In short, MCP is still in its infancy and can bring us many unknown surprises, which is worth looking forward to!
