Trump: Willing to lower tariffs on China at the appropriate time
ChainCatcher news, according to Fortune, U.S. President Trump stated that due to the currently high tariffs between the U.S. and China, which have nearly halted trade between the two countries, he is willing to lower tariffs on China at some point.
Currently, the U.S. imposes tariffs as high as 145% on Chinese imports, while China imposes retaliatory tariffs of 125% on U.S. imports.
Trump stated in the NBC program "Meet The Press With Kristen Welker" that some recent statements made by China are "positive," but emphasized that any agreement between the two countries must be "fair."
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce stated last Friday that it is assessing the possibility of trade negotiations with the U.S., marking the first signals of negotiation from both sides since Trump announced tariffs last month.
