On May 15, 2025, Eastern Time, the Bitcoin native ZK Rollup project GOAT Network officially launched the GOAT BitVM2 testnet. This is the first publicly available, permissionless BitVM2 test network, marking a new phase for Bitcoin ZK Rollup characterized by "verifiability, strong security, and real benefits."

The release of this testnet comes just one week after GOAT Network published the BitVM2 white paper (on May 8, 2025), showcasing its efficient execution capability and forward-looking strategic vision from theoretical design to engineering implementation.

GOAT BitVM2 has undergone significant upgrades based on the original BitVM2 protocol, systematically addressing key issues such as operator double spending, inefficient challenge processes, and the lack of challenge incentive mechanisms. One of the major breakthroughs is the reduction of the original 14-day challenge period to less than 1 day, making it the most efficient and practical BitVM2 implementation to date.

GOAT BitVM2 employs a unique composite architecture that integrates zkMIPS, a decentralized sorter network, and challenge rewards with dual penalty mechanisms to ensure the honest behavior of operators and incentivize challengers to participate in network security maintenance. It also introduces a "universal operator model" that supports the rotation of sorter, prover, and challenger roles, significantly enhancing the activity and decentralization of the Layer 2 network.

The launch of the GOAT BitVM2 testnet also marks GOAT Network as the first industry player to implement a Bitcoin native ZK Rollup. The codebase for GOAT BitVM2 has been fully open-sourced, and registration for challenge nodes is now open globally, inviting developers, researchers, and Bitcoin Builders to join in advancing the implementation of Bitcoin L2.

The core team of GOAT Network stated:

"Without practical incentive mechanisms, no matter how strong the security is, it cannot be realized. BitVM2 is just the starting point; we hope to bring Bitcoin into a usable and scalable Layer 2 era through the practice of GOAT BitVM2."

GOAT Network is committed to building a sustainable Bitcoin native yield network. Through a multi-currency PoS mechanism, BTC and DOGE holders will receive annualized returns of 2%--30%+, covering various scenarios such as staking, trading, and gaming. Unlike other L2 projects that rely on unsustainable models of high-inflation token incentives, GOAT Network has designed a native yield path based on gas fees, MEV, and miner incentives, freeing itself from dependence on unsustainable token incentives.
