The U.S. Senate passed the "Big and Beautiful" bill with a procedural vote of 51 to 49

2025-06-29 11:17:03

ChainCatcher news, according to Jinshi Data reports, on Saturday local time, the U.S. Senate narrowly passed a key procedural vote to advance Trump's tax reform bill by a vote of 51 to 49, increasing the likelihood of the bill's passage in the coming days.

The "big and beautiful" tax and spending bill is a core agenda of Trump's second term. After several hours of delay, all Republicans except for two voted in favor. The originally scheduled 15-minute vote was kept open for over 3 hours due to some members insisting on negotiating with Republican leadership. This bill, advanced using the special procedure of "budget reconciliation," allows Republicans to pass legislation with a simple majority, but it must ensure that the provisions comply with Senate rules. Major policy disagreements and procedural disputes led to Republicans only releasing a revised version of the bill late Friday night, leaving members with less than 24 hours to review it.

Vice President Vance made a special trip to the Capitol that evening to prepare to cast the deciding vote, but ultimately did not need to intervene. The White House issued a warning on Saturday stating that if the bill fails to pass before July 4, it would be "the ultimate betrayal."
