ChainCatcher news, El Salvador's legislative body has approved comprehensive constitutional reforms that allow for indefinite presidential re-election, effectively enabling President Nayib Bukele to remain in power after the end of his current term. The Salvadoran Legislative Assembly stated that Bukele's New Ideas party and its allies passed five reform proposals with a vote of 57 to 3, which also extends the presidential term from five years to six years and eliminates runoff voting. Opponents warn that this move will concentrate power and threaten democratic institutions, as these changes remove long-standing term limits that constrained executive power.

New Ideas party lawmaker Ana Figueroa proposed to end Bukele's current term two years early to align the presidential and congressional elections on the same timeline. If approved, Bukele's current term would end on June 1, 2027, instead of June 1, 2029.
