Colombian President: Plans to use surplus renewable energy to develop Bitcoin mining along the Caribbean coast
According to CoinDesk, Colombian President Gustavo Petro stated that coastal Caribbean cities in the country, such as Barranquilla, Santa Marta, and Riohacha, could utilize surplus renewable energy to become Bitcoin mining hubs.
Gustavo Petro proposed involving the largest local indigenous community, the Wayúu, in project ownership and believes this move will significantly boost development in the Caribbean region. Currently, about 75% of Colombia's electricity comes from renewable resources, and the plan aims to emulate Paraguay's model of attracting miners by using cheap clean energy. As U.S. miners shift towards AI computing, Colombia hopes to fill the global computing power gap by providing idle electricity.
