The President of the European Central Bank may have urged Greece to reject Binance's MiCA license application

According to Crowdfund Insider, Greece has rejected Binance's application for authorization under the EU's regulatory framework for crypto assets, possibly due to political pressure from European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde.

Binance submitted its application to the Hellenic Capital Market Commission earlier in 2026 and established a holding company locally, having passed key technical reviews. However, the application was swiftly reversed between June 7 and 15, 2026. In a meeting in May, Lagarde informed Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis that Europe does not welcome Binance. The reason is that Binance, as a dominant platform providing liquidity for stablecoins, is seen by some policymakers as potentially complicating the digital euro project promoted by the European Central Bank.

With the path in Greece blocked, Binance has shifted its focus to France to seek MiCA licensing.
