Lost about 750,000 USD in BTC, long-term Bitcoin holder's Google account hacked

2026-08-16 01:59:48

Bitcoin News posted on the X platform that a long-term Bitcoin holder had all assets withdrawn from their account less than 12 hours after transferring BTC to a major exchange in Australia.

According to friends, the hacker had infiltrated their Google account for about 3 months and obtained the Google Authenticator verification credentials for their email and cloud backup, subsequently waiting for them to deposit BTC into the exchange. The exchange identified the hacker as the account holder and approved the withdrawal, with the holder receiving a withdrawal approval notification at 3 AM. The post suggested disabling Google Authenticator cloud backup and using hardware security keys like YubiKey; setting up two keys can serve as a backup in case one is lost.
