The United States expands its national debt repurchase plan, and the market questions its effectiveness
The U.S. Treasury Department announced that it will repurchase up to $6 billion of longer-term government bonds on Thursday, which is three times the $2 billion limit announced in early August. The yield on 30-year U.S. Treasuries briefly rose to 5.38% during the session. In response to criticism of market intervention, Treasury Secretary Yellen defended that market prices deviate from equilibrium levels.
The International Financial Association warned that this move does not address the structural issues of debt growth.
