OpenAI released Dots, but dot.com and dots.com are not owned by it

OpenAI released the resident Agent Dots at DevDay, but the domains dot.com and dots.com are currently not owned by OpenAI. Among them, dot.com currently belongs to xAI, and opening it will directly redirect to Grok Bot, while dots.com is also not owned by OpenAI.

Public WHOIS shows that dot.com was transferred in July of this year, about two months before Dots was officially released. After the news broke, the community speculated that xAI acquired the domain in advance, but there is currently no evidence to prove that they knew beforehand that OpenAI would use this name.

dots.com originally belonged to the American women's clothing chain Dots. When the company went bankrupt in 2014, the domain was sold for $335,000 to an undisclosed individual buyer, and the actual holder has not received public confirmation since then.
