The U.S. Congressional Budget Office estimates that the total federal budget deficit for fiscal year 2026 will be $2 trillion, an increase of $218 billion from fiscal year 2025.
Revenue is expected to increase by $169 billion, while spending is projected to rise by approximately $386 billion, with the increase in spending primarily coming from net interest on debt, welfare programs, defense, and education.
