SpaceX is in talks to acquire Boost Mobile, potentially using its network to challenge the three major carriers in the United States
According to the Washington Post, SpaceX is in talks with EchoStar to acquire its wireless business Boost Mobile or to obtain network usage rights to launch its own mobile communication service; the report cites informed sources saying that the two parties have discussed launching wireless services under the SpaceX brand through collaboration in recent months. Reuters cited the report stating that Boost's existing network is primarily leased from AT&T and T-Mobile.
The report states that this move aims to support Elon Musk's Starlink Mobile plan, combining the satellite constellation with ground cellular networks to challenge the three major carriers in the United States. EchoStar had approximately 7.38 million wireless users at the end of the second quarter, mainly Boost Mobile and Gen Mobile customers; Musk also met with EchoStar Chairman Charlie Ergen last month. If the deal involves the transfer of network leasing agreements, it may still require the consent of AT&T and T-Mobile.
