first_img ByteDance's commercialization head of GenAI, Wen Shilei, has been reported to leave and may join Octopus Power

Beating AI news reports that Wen Shilei, the head of ByteDance's commercialization GenAI R&D, has recently left the company, with his next stop likely being the embodied intelligence company Octopus Power, where he will serve as a partner. Wen Shilei joined Baidu in 2011, previously serving as the head of visual technology and chief architect of the smart city division, and has won Baidu's highest award twice. After moving to ByteDance in 2021, he initially focused on digital humans, XR, and other technologies, and later took charge of engineering R&D for generative AI in commercial scenarios such as advertising. This business line has recently lost several core leaders. Former head of the commercialization GenAI department, Peng Bingyue, left in July this year and subsequently joined Google; the former head of the China region, Yuan Zehuan, also left in July to pursue a startup in world modeling. With Wen Shilei's departure, the remaining team members have been reassigned to other departments.Octopus Power was founded in January 2026 by former Horizon and Jianzhihui Robotics executive Du Dalong, primarily developing world models for robots, dexterous hands, and data collection systems, having raised nearly 1 billion yuan in total financing by June this year. On October 15, Octopus Power confirmed that co-founder Liang Zhujin will leave; Liang Zhujin previously oversaw post-training and data operations, and it is currently unclear whether Wen Shilei will take over related responsibilities.

first_img Byte's subsidiary Hongguo Short Drama launched Xiaoguo AI, used for searching and recommending episodes

According to "Reading Plus," the short drama application Hongguo Short Drama App, owned by ByteDance, has launched "Xiaoguo AI." This feature has undergone a period of gray testing and is now officially online, relying on the Doubao large model. It is labeled as Hongguo AI BOT within the app and is positioned as an AI assistant for finding short dramas, providing series search and recommendations. The report states that this is the first time Hongguo has integrated conversational AI into the user-end drama search scenario, beyond AI short drama production.According to practical tests by "Reading Plus," the main entry point is located in the app's search bar. Clicking it leads to the conversation page, and users can also ask questions in the comment section by @XiaoguoAI. The page features quick questions, such as "What short dramas are everyone watching?" and "What are the differences between male-oriented and female-oriented short dramas?" When users input keywords, it returns a list of suggestions, a trending short drama list, and series popularity. The AI responses can pop up short drama cards with play buttons, which redirect to the viewing page when clicked. This tool relies on generative models and search plugins to return information such as titles, plot summaries, poster stills, reputation ratings, and playback channels based on keywords and viewing preferences. From user feedback, it can also record update requests and push notifications when new seasons of followed series are available for reservation.

first_img ByteDance initiates a new round of stock option buybacks at $241.35 per share

According to reports from Major Factory Daily, ByteDance released a company-wide letter on October 13, initiating a new round of stock option repurchases, with a pre-tax repurchase price of $241.35 per share, the same as the price circulated in early September. Participants in this repurchase include former employees, with those who recently left due to business adjustments receiving the same repurchase price per share as current employees, with no discount.According to the company-wide letter, the repurchase amount is calculated based on each granted option. For total package and other types of options, such as those granted upon joining and adjustments to total packages, 50% of the shares that have vested in each batch can be applied for repurchase after vesting, increasing by 10% for each additional year thereafter. For performance-based options granted before January 1, 2026, 100% of the shares that have vested in each batch can be applied for repurchase after vesting; for grants on or after January 1, 2026, 55% can be applied for repurchase after vesting, increasing by 15% for each additional year thereafter. For bonus-based options, 50% of the shares that have vested can be applied for repurchase one year after the first vesting date, and 100% can be applied for repurchase after two years. The company-wide letter also indicated that total package options granted upon joining require approximately 5 years to achieve 100% vesting, while options granted for outstanding performance require about 3 to 4 years to achieve 100% vesting.

SemiAnalysis: ByteDance accounts for nearly one-fifth of China's data center capacity

The semiconductor research organization SemiAnalysis released a survey on Chinese data centers, tracking over 1,000 facilities from more than 60 operators. The report estimates that by the end of 2026, China's data center capacity will exceed 24GW, second only to the United States' 56GW. ByteDance accounts for nearly one-fifth of this, making it the largest data center tenant in the country.ByteDance has leased over 4GW of data center capacity, with suppliers including Qinhuai Data, China United Network Communications, and Century Internet. The report states that by early 2026, ByteDance will still contribute about 90% of Qinhuai Data's revenue. ByteDance has also begun to accelerate its self-built data centers, constructing large facilities in Shanxi, Anhui, and Inner Mongolia to reduce reliance on external suppliers. The report also mentions that while Chinese data centers have long been considered to have a high vacancy rate, AI server rooms are still in short supply. This is due to many old server rooms lacking sufficient power supply and cooling capabilities, making it difficult to directly deploy high-power AI servers, while newly built large AI data centers are quickly being rented out. For example, a 100MW data center, excluding IT equipment such as servers, has a construction cost of about $300 million in China and about $1.5 billion in the United States, with Chinese facilities of the same scale typically delivered in about 12 months. Compared to the power supply and approval issues faced by the United States, the more prominent bottleneck for expanding AI data centers in China is the supply of advanced chips.

first_img Former ByteDance intern Tian Keyu raises nearly 30 million USD, with a valuation of 200 million USD

According to a report by Phoenix Technology citing Bloomberg, former ByteDance intern Tian Keyu has secured nearly $30 million in funding from firms such as Five Sources Capital and IDG Capital, with a post-investment valuation of $200 million. The funds will be used for a startup that is still in stealth mode, competing in the field of world models against AI researchers like Fei-Fei Li.In 2024, during his internship at ByteDance, Tian Keyu was accused of disrupting model training and causing resource waste by writing and altering code due to dissatisfaction with team resource allocation. ByteDance filed a lawsuit seeking 8 million yuan in damages and stated that the intern had been dismissed, while also claiming that online reports of "involving over 8,000 cards and losses exceeding tens of millions of dollars" were grossly exaggerated. The court ruled that Tian Keyu must pay 500,000 yuan for breach of contract and confiscated his entire salary. Tian Keyu stated that he had closed another intern's program to free up computing power, admitted to inappropriate behavior, but described it as "acting on behalf of justice," and expressed that he would take a wiser approach if given another chance.Tian Keyu completed his master's degree at Peking University last summer and is the first author of one of the best papers at NeurIPS 2024. His lab currently has no name or products, with a team of about 10 people, including other former ByteDance employees. He claims to have created a dictionary containing about 200,000 symbols that are unrecognizable to humans for processing videos and plans to input 100 million hours of video into the model, stating that this technology could reduce the cost of generating one second of video by at least an order of magnitude, with plans to showcase it through offline events before the full model release in 2027. As of the time of publication, a ByteDance spokesperson had not responded to inquiries about the dismissal, while representatives from Five Sources Capital and IDG Capital confirmed the investment but did not comment further.
