Trump's direct pressure was ineffective, and some House Republican members still hold reservations about the tax bill
ChainCatcher News, President Trump pressured his Republican colleagues in Congress on Tuesday to unite in support of a comprehensive tax cut bill, but he clearly failed to persuade a handful of stubborn Republicans who could still block the package that encompasses much of Trump's domestic agenda. In a closed-door meeting on Capitol Hill, Trump bluntly warned House Republicans not to make further changes to the massive bill. He strongly cautioned against making it more difficult for people to access Medicaid benefits. According to a person present who spoke on condition of anonymity, Trump told Republicans, "Don't mess with Medicaid." Trump also discouraged Republicans from seeking further reductions in state and local taxes. However, this issue is particularly important for moderate Republicans in high-tax states like California and New York.
