TIP-6780 Latest Update: TRON Developer Community Releases SELFDESTRUCT Instruction Change Notice

The TRON developer community published the latest announcement titled "TIP-6780: Change to the SELFDESTRUCT Opcode" on Medium, and the impact of the instruction change was a key topic in the recent developer meeting. According to the plan, this change will be incorporated into the upcoming java-tron v4.8.1 release, but it will not take effect immediately upon the release. The official activation time will be determined through on-chain governance voting after the network-wide upgrade is completed.According to the announcement, the core adjustment of TIP-6780 is to limit the usage scenarios of SELFDESTRUCT, allowing it to truly delete account data (such as code, storage, and the account itself) only when called in the same transaction in which the contract is created. At the same time, the threshold for use has been raised, with the fixed energy cost adjusted from 0 to 5000 to reduce the risk of abuse. This change will align TRON's behavior with Ethereum's EIP-6780, further enhancing EVM compatibility.Additionally, the developer community conducted a statistical analysis of contracts containing the SELFDESTRUCT instruction in the current TRON network, showing that such contracts account for a very low proportion, and even fewer actually hold assets. Since 2025, most internal transactions related to SELFDESTRUCT have belonged to the "create and destroy" usage pattern, which will continue to function normally after the upgrade. Therefore, the actual impact on existing contracts and user assets is expected to be limited.

The TRON community is discussing the upgrade plan for the SELFDESTRUCT instruction, aiming to be compatible with Ethereum EIP-6780

ChainCatcher news, recently, according to the latest news from the TRON community, at the TRON #43 developer meeting, community developers conducted an in-depth discussion on the SELFDESTRUCT instruction upgrade proposal, proposing a plan compatible with Ethereum EIP-6780, aimed at adjusting the behavior and execution cost of the instruction to enhance network security and compatibility.According to the meeting content, the upgrade proposal mainly includes the following adjustments: the SELFDESTRUCT instruction will only completely remove the contract from the chain and transfer assets to the target address when called "in the same transaction that creates the contract"; otherwise, it will only transfer assets within the contract, and the contract itself will be retained. In addition, the energy consumption for executing SELFDESTRUCT will be adjusted from the current 0 to 5000, to prevent abuse of the instruction and potential denial-of-service attack risks.Community developers stated that this upgrade references Ethereum's Gas cost updates, aiming to achieve higher compatibility with Ethereum. If the proposal is approved, contracts will support multiple executions of SELFDESTRUCT, while a more reasonable execution cost will further enhance the security and stability of the TRON network, providing developers with a more reliable development environment.
