Korea Investment & Securities and OKX Ventures each invested 80 billion won to acquire a 19.6% stake in Coinone

According to CoinDesk, South Korea's major brokerage firm Korea Investment & Securities (KIS) and the investment institution OKX Ventures under the cryptocurrency exchange OKX officially signed an agreement on May 29, with both parties investing 80 billion won (approximately 53 million USD) each to acquire 19.6% of the shares of the South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Coinone (a total of 39.2%). This transaction is still pending approval from regulatory authorities. It is reported that the total transaction amount of 160 billion won will be conducted through a combination of purchasing existing shares and subscribing to new shares. After the transaction is completed, Coinone's founder and CEO Cha Myunghun will hold 27.8% of the shares, continuing to maintain the status of the largest shareholder and retaining management control; Com2uS Holdings and its affiliates will hold 25%; Korea Investment & Securities and OKX Ventures will jointly become the third-largest shareholders.Korea Investment & Securities stated that it will rely on this equity cooperation to promote the issuance and distribution of tokenized securities (STO), expand corporate virtual asset investment clients, and develop digital asset businesses such as bulk brokerage. In addition, recently, as South Korean regulatory authorities hinted at relaxing the principle of financial asset separation, several traditional financial giants in South Korea, including Samsung Securities and Hana Bank, have been accelerating their efforts to acquire shares in virtual asset exchanges.

KB Financial Group completes technology verification for Korean won stablecoin payments and cross-border remittances

KB Financial Group announced that it has completed the technical proof of concept for the Korean won stablecoin in scenarios such as payments, settlements, and international remittances. This verification was jointly completed by KB Financial Group, electronic payment company KG Inicis, public chain Kaia, and digital asset solution company OpenAsset, covering the entire financial service process including the issuance of the Korean won stablecoin, offline payments, merchant settlements, and cross-border remittances.According to reports, the solution migrates the internal settlement system to a blockchain architecture while maintaining users' original financial service habits. Among them, actual payment scenarios have been tested through the offline self-service terminals of the chain coffee brand Hollys, allowing users to make payments via QR codes without the need to install a digital wallet; the system automatically executes on-chain smart contracts during the settlement phase. In addition, in the cross-border remittance test, the system first exchanges the Korean won stablecoin for US dollar stablecoins through Kaia's on-chain liquidity, and then the local partner in Vietnam completes the fiat currency crediting. The entire remittance process takes only about 3 minutes, with fees reduced by approximately 87% compared to traditional SWIFT remittance models.

The South Korean cryptocurrency industry collectively opposes the new anti-money laundering regulations, planning to require all overseas transfers of over 10 million won to be reported as suspicious transactions

According to Cointelegraph, the South Korean crypto industry group DAXA (Digital Asset Exchange Alliance), representing 27 registered virtual asset service providers (VASP), has submitted objections to the Financial Services Commission (FSC) and the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) regarding the proposed amendments to the implementation order of the Specific Financial Information Act.The new regulations aim to require domestic VASPs to report any virtual asset transfers with foreign VASPs as suspicious transaction reports (STR) if the amount reaches 10 million won (approximately $6,800), regardless of the risk level. DAXA warned that this would cause the annual reporting volume of South Korea's five major trading platforms (Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, Korbit, Gopax) to surge from about 63,000 last year to over 5.4 million, making compliance practically impossible. The industry also opposes the proposed requirement to verify the accuracy of customer information, arguing that the subordinate rules impose obligations not clearly defined by law. This industry backlash comes as exchanges face sanctions from financial regulators in court. On April 9, the court ruled to lift part of the business suspension against Upbit operator Dunamu, but the regulators have appealed. On April 30, the court suspended the six-month partial business suspension against Bithumb. Coinone also received a temporary stay of execution. The public consultation period for the new regulations ends on May 11, and it is expected to be finalized in July after regulatory and legal reviews. This highlights the tension between South Korea's tightening of crypto anti-money laundering regulations and the industry's concerns about excessive compliance burdens.
