Coinbase reviews the May outage incident: AWS cascading failure exposes architectural risks

Coinbase released a retrospective report on the large-scale service interruption event on May 7, 2026.The outage lasted approximately 8 hours, with full recovery taking about 12 hours. During this time, trading, deposits, withdrawals, and most core services were unavailable or severely degraded. Coinbase stated that the outage was caused by multiple cooling units failing simultaneously in the cooling system of a data center in one availability zone (use1-az4) in the AWS us-east-1 region, triggering cabinet thermal protection shutdowns, which led to EC2 instances and EBS volumes going offline, affecting multiple internet services.During the recovery process, the Coinbase trading matching engine lost quorum due to the cluster architecture deployed in a single AWS data center losing most nodes. It required urgent code adjustments and the reconstruction of a new node group to restore operation, gradually restarting market trading during the recovery.Additionally, the AWS-managed Kafka (MSK) service experienced control plane failures, preventing the automatic re-election of partition leaders, further blocking quotes, fees, and some settlement and data flow systems, which expanded the overall impact. After manual partition migration in collaboration with the AWS engineering team, the system gradually returned to normal. Coinbase stated that this incident exposed its shortcomings in cross-availability zone automatic switching capabilities and disaster recovery for managed middleware. The company will upgrade its cross-region hot backup architecture, strengthen regular failure drills, and migrate the Kafka system from dual availability zones to a three availability zone deployment, while also working with AWS to advance root cause fixes and improvements.

Sui attributed the three mainnet interruptions to upgrade vulnerabilities, with known interruption risks before the fix

According to The Block, the Sui Foundation released an incident analysis report on the recent three interruptions of the mainnet, attributing the three network outages that occurred last Thursday and Friday to two independent vulnerabilities introduced by the v1.72 version upgrade. The first interruption lasted about six and a half hours, while the second and third occurred on Friday morning and afternoon, respectively. The first two interruptions were caused by the "address balance" feature introduced in v1.72, which exposed flaws in the transaction fee deduction method. When a transaction was canceled due to insufficient funds, the network would still spend those funds, resulting in a negative balance that caused the validation node reconciliation process to crash. The foundation acknowledged that the temporary fix pushed urgently on Thursday carried known interruption risks, and the team accepted this risk to quickly restore on-chain services, which led to another network interruption on Friday morning. The third interruption was triggered by another undisclosed random state vulnerability, occurring when the validation nodes restarted to install the fix patch. Sui stated that user funds were never at risk, that both vulnerabilities have been fixed, and that a mechanism to forcibly terminate stalled epochs has been established. The foundation also mentioned that AI agents with access to its production systems significantly accelerated the diagnostic process.

a16z Crypto: The prediction market still needs to solve the problems of manipulation risks and information bias

a16z Crypto published an article analyzing the unique value and challenges faced by prediction markets. Prediction markets allow participants to trade on the outcomes of events, aggregating dispersed information through price signals to provide real-time estimates of the probabilities of future events. Unlike traditional polls, prediction markets have the ability to update in real-time and incentivize participants to bet their capital on their information, thereby improving prediction accuracy. The article points out that prediction markets are used not only by companies for product launches and research experiment forecasts but also by the media as a source of "crowd wisdom," covering a wide range of events from geopolitical issues to AI model performance. Its core advantage lies in providing independent probability estimates for specific events, rather than relying on indirect signals from overall asset price movements. However, prediction markets still face challenges related to infrastructure and market design, including event verification, contract settlement, participant information adequacy, and potential manipulation risks.a16z believes that if these issues are resolved, prediction markets are expected to become important tools for decision-making and information aggregation, expanding financial and societal insights into future events.

Chainalysis: Compliance baseline in the cryptocurrency industry is tightening, and indirect risk monitoring remains a shortcoming

A recent report from blockchain analysis company Chainalysis points out that compliance standards in the cryptocurrency industry are tightening significantly, with about 47% of organizations entering the market in 2026 having pre-warning standards that can reach the strict levels of the top 10% of the industry in 2020. This indicates that the entire ecosystem is maturing rapidly, with newcomers equipped with more aggressive monitoring measures from the outset. The report shows that companies' "direct monitoring" of funds coming directly from known illegal sources has become consistent and strict, but there is still a significant gap in "indirect monitoring" of funds flowing through intermediary addresses. For example, the indirect risk warning thresholds for categories such as ransomware and fraudulent stores on cryptocurrency trading platforms are often 10 to 100 times higher than direct thresholds. The Chainalysis team points out that this gap between direct and indirect monitoring creates opportunities for illegal actors. Companies that can bridge this gap will not only enhance their regulatory defenses but also distinguish themselves as trustworthy counterparties. The report suggests that this indicates the industry is in a transitional period, having achieved specialization in direct risk management but not yet treating indirect risks with the same rigor. The elevation of industry compliance standards is a response to increasingly stringent regulations and ongoing threats from entities such as North Korean hacker groups. In 2025 alone, hackers linked to North Korea caused approximately $2 billion in cryptocurrency losses.
