A hacker exploited a technical error from cryptocurrency market maker Wintermute to steal 20 million OP tokens, with Wintermute taking responsibility for the incident.

It is reported that to prepare for the launch of OP tokens, the Optimism Foundation invited the cryptocurrency market maker Wintermute to provide liquidity supply services. The Optimism Foundation allocated 20 million OP tokens to Wintermute, but Wintermute later discovered that the wallet address used to receive the loan was inaccessible because it relied on Ethereum L1 multi-signature technology, which had not yet been deployed to Optimism operating as L2. Subsequently, Wintermute began to restore operations, aiming to deploy the L1 multi-signature contract to the same address on L2. An attacker deployed a multi-signature with different initialization parameters on L2 before Wintermute completed the restoration and controlled the 20 million OP tokens. (Blockworks)
