Introduction

In 2023, humanity's reality remains tense and weary, with escalating geopolitical conflicts, failed coordination mechanisms, frequent extreme weather events, and challenges related to AI safety casting an unknown shadow over the future. The unicorns of the early century have grown into industry giants in the 20s, and the once-imagined global village is once again shrouded in darkness. The dream of globalization seems to be receding, and everyone is worried: are we really entering a world of closure and confrontation?

At the same time, new technologies and new arts are surging beneath the surface, with cutting-edge technologies like Web3, AI, and the metaverse showcasing the possibility of a digital utopia.

Today, more than at any other time in the past, we should collectively explore and seek answers under the principle of positive externalities!

We are experiencing a wave similar to the Age of Exploration from the 15th to the 17th century, where there was a group of people who were unwilling to accept the old world order,

who ventured forth with their own flesh and blood to try new navigation technologies, setting sail to find the new world they envisioned;

or who challenged traditional academia and authority with their own flesh and blood, writing and painting, igniting a great explosion of human thought and art.

Today, the new era context has also given rise to a group of explorers who are riding the waves in the fields of technology and humanities,

perhaps they are cyber Zheng He, or crypto Columbus, or metaverse Jenny Barrett; they are idealistic digital nomads, flocking to the world's technological hotspots, cultural issues, or social solutions,

all heading towards the "Grand Line" in pursuit of glory and dreams.

In the tense and weary times of 2023, whether mainstream society acknowledges it or not, the Age of Exploration empowered by new technologies and the Renaissance movement under a new humanistic context have already begun to stir, with projects emerging one after another.

We hope that WAMO, guided by the values of openness, mutual benefit, collaboration, and open source, can drive the winds of a new era; this is the Road to WAMO!

Road to WAMO

Before the official event of WAMO Summer 2023 · Chiang Mai at the end of the year, a series of Road to WAMO activities will be launched, aiming to revive the spirit of WAMO in Chiang Mai, advocating for good collaboration as the core.

With a series of academic conferences, Southeast Asian socio-technical issues, creative writing camps, and global digital art group exhibitions as precursor activities, we will attempt to explore how technological updates can transform social structures like in the Age of Exploration, and how humanistic creation can transform paradigms of thought like in the Renaissance, ultimately providing more imagination for hosting WAMO Summer 2023 · Chiang Mai.

A Road to WAMO online and offline festival that collides humanistic arts with Web3 technologies and ideas, a social experiment exploring new organizational forms and collaboration models in the digital age, with positive externality as its purpose.

The sounds of the tropical rainy season are also faintly present:

The Road to WAMO is a series of precursor activities before the official hosting of WAMO, while WAMO Summer 2023 · Chiang Mai (WAMO 2023 Chiang Mai) is built upon the foundational paths and paradigms of the Road to WAMO.

We call on more partners to participate in this exploration of human technology and the expansion of thought, to ride the waves together; in the process of participating in the Road to WAMO, we will gradually clarify what WAMO Summer 2023 · Chiang Mai (WAMO 2023 Chiang Mai) is and how to present it, because WAMO is co-created by everyone.

This is not the official WAMO,

but it is also WAMO; we are always on the road to WAMO.
