The United States refuses to provide Japan with reciprocal tariff exemptions
According to ChainCatcher news, as reported by Jinshi, informed sources revealed that the United States recently rejected Japan's request for a comprehensive exemption of the 10% reciprocal tariff and tariffs on specific countries during negotiations.
Sources stated that U.S. officials, including Treasury Secretary Mnuchin, indicated last week in Washington during talks with Japan's chief negotiator Akizawa Ryozo that the Trump administration intends to only reduce the specific country tariffs by 14%, which are suspended until early July.
During the second round of negotiations, the U.S. emphasized that, depending on the progress of the talks, it would only consider extending the suspension measures for 90 days or reducing the tariffs by 14%. Tokyo has been seeking the complete elimination of reciprocal tariffs, a 25% automobile tariff, and a 25% steel and aluminum tariff from the U.S. Washington has stated that it will not negotiate on the global 10% base tariff or tariffs on automobiles and steel products.
