BUIDL's assets under management have reached 2.3 billion USD, and BlackRock plans to expand the use of tokenized asset collateral
The world's largest asset management company, BlackRock, is exploring the expansion of tokenized assets from the cryptocurrency market to the traditional financial sector, making them usable not only as collateral but also for payments. The tokenized money market fund BUIDL, launched by the company in 2024, has seen its assets under management grow to approximately $2.3 billion. Subsequently, related products were launched in the United States and Europe, and in September of this year, approval was granted to launch a digital liquidity fund denominated in Hong Kong dollars.
BlackRock is shifting its focus from issuing stocks, bonds, and money market funds on blockchain networks to improving the transfer methods and collateral uses of related assets. Through tokenization, investors can directly transfer their held assets to other investors or use them as trading collateral without needing to redeem them for cash first. Nikhil Sharma, a director of the BlackRock digital assets team, stated that early users of tokenized funds were primarily participants in the cryptocurrency market, and the key moving forward is to establish a bridging mechanism that allows traditional financial institutions to use tokenized products without having to build separate independent systems.
