When cryptocurrency enters the "regulatory deep water zone": Why is compliance pain an inevitable path for Web3 to achieve global adoption?

Summary: Regulation is not the end of the cryptocurrency industry, but rather its "coming of age" as it integrates into the mainstream financial system. The sanctions from the UK and Europe are forcing exchanges to upgrade their compliance, creating a "transparency premium" and clearing obstacles for large-scale entry of Wall Street funds.

Regulation is not the end of the cryptocurrency industry, but rather its "coming of age" as it integrates into the mainstream financial system. The sanctions from the UK and Europe are forcing exchanges to upgrade their compliance, creating a "transparency premium" and clearing obstacles for large-scale entry of Wall Street funds.

In recent years, the global cryptocurrency market seems to have entered an unprecedented "strong regulatory cycle." From the precise asset freezes imposed by the UK on some leading cryptocurrency exchanges in May this year, to the EU officially launching the 21st round of sanctions and implementing widespread trading bans on multiple crypto platforms by the end of July, the heavy-handed actions of regulatory agencies in various countries have led many investors to doubt the industry's prospects.

It is easy for outsiders to interpret these measures as a suppression of Web3 innovation by the traditional system. However, if we peel back the layers and examine the historical context and underlying logic of financial development, we arrive at a completely opposite conclusion: this series of regulations and sanctions is not the end of cryptocurrency, but rather an inevitable "rite of passage" before it sheds its "fringe carnival" character and formally integrates into the global mainstream financial system.

Clarifying the Myth of "Sanctions": Inevitable Friction from Expansion

First, we must break a widely held misconception: being placed on a sanctions or strict regulatory list does not mean that a platform has engaged in subjective malicious fraud or criminal activity.

The original intention behind the birth of Web3 technology was to establish a decentralized, borderless, and efficiently flowing value transmission network. However, the current global financial order is still built on a system defined by sovereign national boundaries, strict geopolitical considerations, and anti-money laundering (AML) rules. When the daily trading volume, user base, and asset accumulation of cryptocurrency exchanges reach a scale that can rival multinational banks and even influence international capital flow patterns, these two fundamentally different systems will inevitably create severe friction.

Whether it is the UK's "targeted strikes" based on specific security concerns or the EU's intention to incorporate liquidity into a normalized management framework through "systemic defense," these are essentially necessary risk control measures taken by state machinery in the face of emerging large financial forces. Looking back in history, from Binance to Kraken, almost all globally influential leading exchanges have faced severe compliance challenges due to this "system friction." This precisely proves that crypto assets have grown too large to be ignored and have officially taken a seat at the global macro-financial negotiation table.

"Transparency Premium": Compliance is the Only Pass for Traditional Institutions to Enter

Many early cryptocurrency believers worry that catering to regulations will undermine the spirit of decentralization. However, in fact, standardization is the strongest foundation for achieving large-scale adoption for the long-term development of the entire industry.

For a long time, traditional financial giants—such as large asset management firms, pension funds, and family offices—have maintained a "loud thunder, little rain" wait-and-see attitude towards the crypto market. The core pain point preventing them from pulling the trigger is not the volatility of Bitcoin, but rather the long-term lack of clear regulatory boundaries and asset transparency in the market.

The strong regulatory actions from developed economies like the UK and EU have essentially played the role of a "catalyst," forcing leading global exchanges to prioritize "compliance and security" as the highest strategic priority for their survival. To meet the new standards, exchanges must invest huge costs to upgrade their KYC (Know Your Customer) systems, build risk control firewalls in line with international standards, and proactively sever high-risk and gray capital chains. This passive or active purification process is creating a highly valuable "transparency premium" for the market, not only clearing compliance barriers for Wall Street capital to enter but also injecting the "predictability" that traditional finance values most into the entire industry.

Entering the Second Half: Embracing the Popularization of Web3 on the Foundation of Trust

After more than a decade of wild growth, the cryptocurrency industry is irrevocably entering a second half that requires the establishment of a deep "trust foundation." The intervention of regulatory agencies may cause short-term pain and restructuring for individual platforms, but from the long-term perspective of the industry ecosystem, this is an inevitable evolution of refining the essential elements.

As the operational standards, asset transparency, and risk control capabilities of exchanges gradually align with those of top traditional financial institutions, the beneficiaries will not only be institutional investors. A more resilient, regulated, and highly transparent crypto market will effectively dispel the concerns of billions of ordinary people worldwide. In the foreseeable future, we will see compliant crypto infrastructure become as ubiquitous as online banking today, allowing more people to truly access and enjoy the technological and wealth dividends brought by Web3 in the safest and most convenient way.
