The Wall Street Journal: Coinbase applies to launch perpetual contracts for individual U.S. stocks on a regulated platform in the United States
According to The Wall Street Journal, Coinbase has applied for regulatory approval to launch perpetual contracts linked to major U.S. stocks on its regulated derivatives platform in the U.S., targeting about 50 to 60 stocks, including Apple, Microsoft, Tesla, and Nvidia, with plans to launch within the year after approval. The product is intended to be listed by Coinbase Derivatives and traded by Coinbase Financial Markets for clients, requiring approval from the SEC and CFTC.
The report states that Coinbase is already offering cryptocurrency perpetual contracts and thematic stock index perpetual contracts in the U.S., and has launched individual stock perpetual contracts for non-U.S. users in March this year. At the end of May, the CFTC approved the listing of perpetual contracts on registered platforms in the U.S. Individual stock perpetual contracts are currently mainly traded on the decentralized exchange Hyperliquid and have not yet landed on regulated platforms in the U.S. The prediction market platform Kalshi has also applied to launch regulated individual stock perpetual contracts.
