Netflix released a trailer for an eight-episode series that tells the story of the collapse of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX, focusing on former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried and his colleague and girlfriend, Caroline Ellison, head of FTX's sister company Alameda Research. The series will premiere on November 19, with Anthony Boyle portraying Bankman-Fried and Julia Garner portraying Ellison. The trailer emphasizes that "going all in on math is the optimal strategy," seemingly pointing to FTX's use of user funds for high-risk investments. Ellison, played by Garner, says in the trailer, "Lying isn't bad for a good cause," echoing Ellison's testimony during the 2023 trial, where she stated that Bankman-Fried believed the rules against lying and stealing did not necessarily apply to effective altruism, a philosophy that advocates doing good whenever possible, including through accumulating wealth to donate to charitable causes. After the collapse and bankruptcy of FTX, Bankman-Fried, Ellison, and related individuals were indicted in December 2022. Ellison pleaded guilty and cooperated with prosecutors to testify, while Bankman-Fried chose to stand trial, was convicted on seven counts of fraud, and sentenced to 25 years in prison. As of October, he remains incarcerated in federal prison and has requested a pardon from President Trump and for the Supreme Court to overturn his conviction; Ellison was released in January.

Former Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison has joined the nonprofit organization Manifund. Manifund co-founder Austin Chen stated that Ellison will be responsible for developing the organization’s donation platform and enhancing its charitable work. Ellison has been on a trial basis at the organization since July, transitioned to full-time in August, and has been posting work updates under the alias "Carol."Ellison pleaded guilty in December 2022 to fraud and conspiracy charges related to the collapse of the FTX exchange in 2022, which resulted in billions of dollars in customer losses. She cooperated with prosecutors and testified against FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Ellison is set to begin serving a two-year sentence in November 2024 and will be released early in January 2026 for cooperating with the investigation.Chen stated in a post, "I believe in redemption. Caroline has acknowledged her mistakes, is working to repay creditors, and has served time in prison. I hope the world can recognize that too." Ellison expressed excitement about her new position, apologized for her past actions, and thanked Austin for giving her a second chance, stating that he judges her based on her current work performance rather than her past. According to its website, Manifund focuses on artificial intelligence safety and effective altruism projects.

Industry insiders are concerned about the possibility of anti-crypto SEC Commissioner Caroline Crenshaw being re-elected, calling for changes at the SEC

ChainCatcher news, according to Cointelegraph, the U.S. Senate Banking Committee will vote on December 11 to decide whether to re-nominate SEC Commissioner Caroline Crenshaw, a cryptocurrency skeptic. Several executives in the crypto industry have expressed disappointment over her potential reappointment. Crenshaw was one of the two SEC commissioners who voted against approving the spot Bitcoin ETF in January.Coinbase President and COO Emilie Choi stated, "Caroline Crenshaw is against cryptocurrency. She even embarrassingly opposed the Bitcoin ETF. The SEC needs to change."Alexander Grieve, Vice President of Government Affairs at crypto investment firm Paradigm, said that Crenshaw's departure would be "the last 'gift' to the cryptocurrency industry," as Senate Banking Committee Chairman Sherrod Brown is trying to force through the re-nomination of anti-crypto SEC Commissioner Caroline Crenshaw.Bloomberg ETF analyst James Seyffart noted that Crenshaw is not only an "ally" of SEC Chairman and cryptocurrency skeptic Gary Gensler but is also "more strongly opposed to cryptocurrency" than Gensler himself."Just read her opposition letter to the Bitcoin ETF approval from January," Seyffart added, noting that another opposing SEC commissioner, Jaime Lizárraga, "didn't even join the position she expressed in her letter." After the SEC approved the issuance of a Bitcoin spot ETF in the U.S. on January 10, Crenshaw, who was sworn in as an SEC commissioner in August 2020, stated that the SEC's approval of the ETF was "unreasonable and inconsistent with historical norms."Austin Campbell, CEO of digital payment company WSPN, stated that he wants to "remind all Democrats that Caroline Crenshaw voted to say that the SEC should defy a federal judge's order, break the law, and reject BTC ETFs after being ordered by the court to approve them."
