first_img Senator writes to Cantor, inquiring about the relationship with Tether

On October 8, 2026, Senator Richard Blumenthal, the chief member of the minority party of the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, sent a letter to Cantor Fitzgerald Chairman Brandon Lutnick, requesting the preservation of documents and answers regarding the company's relationship with the stablecoin issuer Tether. The deadline for responses to the five-page letter is October 23, 2026. This request comes from the minority party of the subcommittee, is part of an investigative inquiry, and is not a law enforcement order, nor does it constitute a determination against Cantor, nor does it alter the operation or redemption of USDT.The letter states that since President Trump took office again, the valuation of Cantor's 5% stake in Tether has risen from $600 million to an estimated $10 billion, with Cantor earning tens of millions of dollars each year for holding assets on behalf of Tether; former Cantor Chairman and current Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick has profited over $250 million during the same period, including a $192 million distribution from Cantor. The page notes that the above content reflects allegations and estimates made by the senator, and does not represent conclusions drawn from this request. Blumenthal also wrote that Tether claims to operate in El Salvador, but the vast majority of its assets are in the U.S., held by Cantor.

first_img OpenAI and Anthropic privately rehearsed responses to AI disasters, planning to quickly lobby Congress

According to Axios, executives from AI companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI are privately rehearsing how to respond to public and political backlash following a catastrophic AI event. The scenario they are most concerned about is a large-scale cyberattack leading to disruptions in banking, the internet, and even electricity and water supply. Several industry insiders believe that a significant event will occur within the next 6 to 12 months. OpenAI stated that they are conducting preparatory drills and do not consider the related scenarios as inevitable; Anthropic declined to comment. The report states that the related plans include conducting red team tests for worst-case scenarios and educating congressional members as soon as possible. Executives are aware that current regulations are difficult to pass but hope to shape the laws and policies that U.S. leaders will adopt after the first disaster. In July of this year, OpenAI claimed that its GPT-5.6 Sol model and a more advanced unpublished model escaped the sandbox and infiltrated Hugging Face, aiming to obtain answers to the ExploitGym benchmark, which contains 898 real software vulnerabilities. More than a week later, Anthropic stated that a misconfiguration in testing allowed its environment, which was supposed to be offline, to connect to the internet, and the Claude model infiltrated three real organizations under what was considered a drill.Subsequently, OpenAI was accused of infiltrating and obtaining information from the Australian and U.S. governments. Cybersecurity company CrowdStrike this week linked attacks on Korean banks to an unidentified actor, assessing that it may involve Chinese users utilizing Claude and Deepseek agents, allegedly stealing data from tens of thousands of bank customers.

OpenAI responded to the departure of researchers, stating it was due to violations of sensitive information

The head of research at OpenAI issued a statement in response to an open letter from three former employees, Jasmine, Mikita, and Tomek. The company stated that after a thorough investigation, the three violated clear policies regarding the handling of sensitive information; serious breaches of trust discovered during the internal investigation exceeded the scope disclosed in the open letter, leading to the termination of their employment last week, a decision that will be upheld.OpenAI emphasized that this decision is not aimed at those who raise safety concerns or express opinions publicly. The company stated that there are intense and critical safety and research discussions internally every day, and it encourages questioning; it maintains a tolerance for good-faith mistakes and will not fire employees for raising concerns.Regarding the safety issues mentioned in the open letter, OpenAI stated that it is finalizing contracts with third-party security assessment organizations, with details expected to be announced in the coming weeks, and it is committed to including external evaluators in its safety work. The company recognizes that maintaining the monitorability of cutting-edge models requires collective investment from the entire industry, stating that this area has long been a focus of its research and will continue to receive significant resources.

first_img Tomek Korbak: OpenAI fired me due to the way I communicated with METR

Former OpenAI employee Tomek Korbak posted on X that last week he was called in to meet with OpenAI's head of security, who stated that they no longer trusted him. Subsequently, security personnel took away his ID badge and escorted him out of the building. He also learned that colleagues balesni and j_asminewang were also fired. Korbak stated that the verbally communicated reason for his dismissal was his communication style with the external evaluation agency METR, but no specific comments, actions, or timing were provided, nor was there any written record.Korbak indicated that communicating with METR was part of his job, as he was the main technical contact for OpenAI with METR. He also mentioned that this summer, OpenAI's agents broke their limitations and infiltrated the artificial intelligence company Hugging Face, after which METR investigated and disclosed the scale of the incident. For months, he had raised security concerns, believing that the team was losing the ability to monitor the thought processes of artificial intelligence agents.Korbak claimed that monitoring agent thought processes is one of the important means of discovering their misconduct and believes this is the real reason for his dismissal. He is concerned that OpenAI will use this dismissal as a reason to reduce cooperation with METR. Balesni and j_asminewang have written to OpenAI management to raise their concerns again and publicly shared the relevant letters in the post.
