Analysts rebut the argument that Ethereum's liquidity moat has been breached: ETH still holds value as a reserve asset, with 36% of the supply already staked

Blockworks analyst Jake Koch-Gallup published a rebuttal to the viewpoint that Ethereum is losing its liquidity moat, arguing that despite the challenges to ETH's value capture ability and stablecoin market share, its reserve asset characteristics, Layer 2 ecosystem, and institutional adoption still constitute a long-term competitive advantage. In response to the issue of low on-chain revenue for Ethereum, Jake pointed out that ETH's valuation depends not only on actual economic value (REV) but also includes reserve asset and collateral premiums, with ETH's market capitalization currently about 1,100 times the REV of the past 12 months. Additionally, the development of Layer 2 networks such as Robinhood Chain and Base can still strengthen the Ethereum ecosystem, rather than indicating that funds and applications are completely leaving Ethereum. Jake also noted that Ethereum currently accounts for about 65% of the total value locked (TVL) in DeFi, with approximately 45% of the on-chain managed scale in real-world assets (RWA), while spot ETFs and corporate treasuries collectively hold about 13% of the total ETH supply, and about 36% of the ETH supply is currently staked.Although Ethereum's stablecoin market share has gradually faced dilution pressure from around 51%, Jake believes that as the overall stablecoin market expands, its absolute scale may continue to grow. However, Jake also acknowledged that relying solely on ETH's reserve asset premium, without sufficient revenue and value return mechanisms, raises questions about its valuation sustainability.

first_img Bitmine staked over 5 million ETH, expecting an annual staking income of 334 million USD

Cryptocurrency asset company Bitmine Immersion Technologies announced last week that it has increased its holdings by 27,180 ETH, bringing its total ETH holdings to over 5.95 million, valued at approximately $1.54 billion, accounting for about 4.9% of the circulating supply of Ethereum. Including cash and other cryptocurrency assets, the company's total holdings amount to approximately $15.8 billion.Bitmine stated that currently over 5.06 million ETH are staked, and based on the current yield, it is expected to generate approximately $334 million in staking income annually, with about 85% of its ETH holdings used for staking. In comparison, the staking ratio for Grayscale Ethereum Staked ETF (ETHE) is 84.6%. Since BTC does not generate native staking income, this strategy has advantages over treasury companies holding Bitcoin. On Monday, Bitmine's stock price remained flat, around $25, having risen nearly 38% over the past month.Meanwhile, Michael Saylor's Strategy has not purchased Bitcoin for the second consecutive week, instead opting to repurchase its STRC preferred shares. Between September 8 and 13, Strategy spent $139.3 million to repurchase approximately 1.42 million shares of STRC, following a previous week where it repurchased $176.3 million worth of STRC. As of September 13, Strategy's Bitcoin holdings remained unchanged at 845,050 coins.

first_img Better and Coinbase launched Bitcoin collateral loans, and the staked Bitcoin can be re-collateralized

According to CoinDesk, the Bitcoin mortgage product jointly launched by Better Mortgage and Coinbase has been fully launched last week. Borrowers can pledge Bitcoin at a 250% collateral rate to pay for the down payment on a home. For example, to purchase a $500,000 property, one would need to pledge $250,000 in Bitcoin to support a $100,000 down payment. Since the full launch, the pre-application loan scale has reached $360 million, higher than the previous estimated $260 million from the waiting list users. At closing, borrowers will receive two loans: one is a conventional mortgage secured by the property that meets Fannie Mae standards, and the other is a down payment loan secured by pledged Bitcoin and a subordinate lien on the property. Better disclosed that it may re-pledge the Bitcoin pledged by borrowers, as long as an equivalent amount of assets is retained for return. Borrowers cannot retrieve their crypto assets early and must wait until the conventional mortgage is fully repaid or refinanced to recover them, meaning Bitcoin may be locked for up to 15 to 30 years.Unlike typical crypto loans, a drop in Bitcoin prices will not trigger a margin call or automatic liquidation; liquidation of pledged assets may only occur 60 days after the borrower defaults. Coinbase only acts as a custodian and technology provider and does not participate in credit decisions. Currently, the product only supports Bitcoin collateral; both parties mentioned USDC when announced in March but ultimately chose to launch with BTC first.

first_img BitMine has staked 5.07 million ETH, accounting for 4.9% of the total Ethereum supply

Bitcoin mining company BitMine Immersion Technologies stated in its latest staking disclosure that as of August 30, it has staked 5,067,309 ETH, valued at approximately $12.7 billion based on a price of $2,511. The company's disclosed staking balance remained unchanged from August 9 to 30, while it added 53,501 ETH in the latest week, bringing its total holdings to 5,901,112 ETH.BitMine indicated that its Ethereum vault accounts for about 4.9% of the total Ethereum supply of 120.7 million coins, and the company had previously set a target to acquire 5% of the total Ethereum supply. The company has set the annualized yield for its staking operations over the past seven days at 2.63%, stating that the annualized staking income corresponding to the current holdings is approximately $335 million; if the entire ETH balance is staked through its self-built network and staking partners at the same yield, the annualized staking rewards could reach $390 million.BitMine officially launched its self-built "Made in America Validator Network" (MAVAN) in April this year. In its April disclosure, the company mentioned that some staked ETH had already been deployed on MAVAN, but did not specify the exact amount. BitMine's staking holdings were 4,879,157 ETH at the beginning of July, surpassed 5 million on August 9, and have remained stable in the subsequent four weekly disclosures. The company's chairman, Tom Lee, has stated that BitMine's staked ETH amount exceeds that of any other entity.
