Crypto journalists say the midterm elections are unfavorable for crypto, with several pro-crypto lawmakers losing their seats

Crypto journalist Eleanor Terrett published an article summarizing the key results of the U.S. midterm elections, stating that the outcomes are generally unfavorable for the Republican Party and the crypto industry. She pointed out that despite over $64 million invested by the crypto industry, it was unable to prevent Sherrod Brown from returning to the Senate, where Brown may gain a leadership position on a committee with jurisdiction over crypto issues. Sherrod Brown previously served as the chairman of the Senate Banking Committee and holds significant influence over legislation and regulation of digital assets.Eleanor Terrett noted that Brown is cautious and even skeptical about crypto, emphasizing that consumer and investor protection should take priority. He advocates for enhanced information disclosure, segregation of customer assets, combating conflicts of interest, and anti-money laundering measures, opposing industry-led lax legislation. While he does not outright reject reforms on stablecoins and market structure, he insists that the regulatory framework must become stricter and not dilute the standards of traditional financial markets.Additionally, pro-crypto representatives Bryan Steil, Zach Nunn, and Ann Wagner were defeated, and Mike Lawler has conceded to Cait Conley, although the Associated Press has yet to make a final determination on New York's 17th congressional district. Kirsten Gillibrand, chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, helped the Democrats secure a Senate majority that exceeded expectations. After the Republican Party lost control of the Senate, Tim Scott is expected to transition from chairman of the Banking Committee to minority leader; the outcome in French Hill's district has not yet been determined, but it appears he may narrowly win and is expected to become minority leader, with the chairmanship taken over by Maxine Waters. Pete Ricketts won in Nebraska, and Andy Barr secured the vacant Senate seat in Kentucky, succeeding Mitch McConnell and potentially competing for a position on the Banking Committee.

Former Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown defeated incumbent Republican Senator Jon Husted in the Ohio Senate seat race, reclaiming the Senate seat, which poses a setback for the cryptocurrency political action committee Fairshake. Earlier this year, Fairshake invested $30 million in the Ohio campaign, explicitly targeting Brown. The crypto PAC and the broader cryptocurrency industry played a significant role in the 2024 elections, spending millions to influence political outcomes. This is not the first time Fairshake has funded efforts against Brown. Brown previously served as the chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, leading the cryptocurrency-related agenda and calling for action against the use of cryptocurrencies to fund terrorism and evade sanctions. In 2024, Fairshake invested $12 million to support pro-crypto Republican Bernie Moreno in challenging Brown, successfully defeating him. With the Democrats regaining control of the Senate, Brown may become the chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, which has jurisdiction over digital assets and prediction markets. Sources previously told The Block that if Brown takes the position, he is unlikely to push for any cryptocurrency legislation.Husted received support from the cryptocurrency advocacy group Stand With Crypto, having voted in favor of several cryptocurrency bills, including the broad cryptocurrency legislation "Clarity Act," and received an A rating from the organization, while Brown was rated F. Other candidates supported by Stand With Crypto include New Hampshire Democrat Chris Pappas, who won his campaign. Additionally, Democratic Senators Cory Booker and Mark Warner both successfully secured re-election, both of whom were involved in cryptocurrency legislative negotiations. Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico received an A rating for his previous pro-crypto statements and voting to support the establishment of a strategic Bitcoin reserve in the state, defeating Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Tuesday.

The U.S. cryptocurrency industry has invested approximately $63 million to block Sherrod Brown's return to the Senate

According to CoinDesk, the U.S. cryptocurrency industry is investing about $63 million in an attempt to prevent former Senator Sherrod Brown from returning to Congress in the Ohio elections. Among them, the cryptocurrency industry's super political action committee Fairshake has invested nearly $56 million, while the political action committee under the Winklevoss brothers has invested about $7.2 million. Including the election spending for 2024, the political contributions from the cryptocurrency industry targeting Brown have exceeded $100 million in the past two years. The latest polls show that Brown has a slight lead over incumbent Senator Jon Husted, but the margin in most polls is still within the margin of error. The prediction market Kalshi gives Brown a 68% chance of winning, while also predicting a 68% chance for the Democrats to regain control of the Senate.Brown previously served as the chairman of the Senate Banking Committee and did not promote legislation for the cryptocurrency industry during his tenure. Reports indicate that if the Democrats regain control of the Senate, Elizabeth Warren may become the chairman of the Banking Committee, and Brown could also obtain an important committee position, which would influence the advancement of cryptocurrency market structure bills such as the CLARITY Act.

first_img Fairshake affiliated PAC invested over 52 million dollars in the Ohio Senate election, opposing Sherrod Brown

According to documents submitted by the Federal Election Commission (FEC) on October 15, the political action committee Fairshake, primarily funded by Coinbase and Ripple Labs, has invested $46.6 million through its affiliated organization Defend American Jobs in the Ohio Senate election for media advertising opposing former Congressman Sherrod Brown's return to the Senate and supporting Republican incumbent Jon Husted. This expenditure is over 50% more than Fairshake's initial plan of $30 million announced in September. In an interview aired on Pod Save America on October 16, Brown responded that he has spent his entire career battling Wall Street, big pharmaceutical companies, and oil giants, achieving success in many cases, while Husted is a spokesperson for these forces, which is why they have invested tens of millions of dollars. In addition to Fairshake, the super PAC Digital Freedom Fund, established by Gemini co-founders Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, reported approximately $3 million in advertising expenditures this week to oppose Brown and support Husted, bringing the total media spending in the Ohio campaign to over $5.9 million. With less than three weeks until the U.S. elections, early voting in Ohio has been underway for 10 days.Fairshake's spending this round has exceeded $41 million for 2024, when the PAC supported Republican Bernie Moreno and opposed the incumbent Brown. Brown, who previously served as chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, is one of the lawmakers in Congress openly questioning the laws and policies supported by the cryptocurrency industry. Defend American Jobs also reported spending over $6.7 million in the Nebraska Senate election opposing independent candidate Dan Osborn, whose opponent, Republican Pete Ricketts, voted in favor of the Digital Asset Market Structure Act and legislation related to stablecoins. Fairshake stated in January of this year that it held $193 million in cash before the election.
