first_img Hut 8 won the bid for two data centers in Texas from Poolin for 140 million USD

According to court documents, the Bitcoin mining company Hut 8 has made a bid of $140 million to become the winning bidder for the two data center sites of the bankrupt mining company Poolin located in Texas. The bid includes cash and other considerations, covering Poolin's Pyote and Tarbush sites. The transaction must be approved by the bankruptcy court in New Jersey before it can be completed, with a sale hearing scheduled for September 29.Hut 8's bid is nearly three times the initial bid of $52 million from Thor CALAP, which offered $15 million for the Pyote site and $37 million for the Tarbush site. Additionally, DigiPower X bid $36.5 million for Pyote, while Pecos Industrial Development, designated by the AI infrastructure company Fluidstack, bid $100.5 million for Tarbush. Poolin and its two U.S. affiliates filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in July after shutting down mining and hosting operations at the Texas sites. Court documents indicate that its debts amount to approximately $173.1 million, of which about $163.7 million are unsecured promissory notes owed to Poolin Wallet users after withdrawals were frozen in 2022.This acquisition will further expand Hut 8's data center footprint. The former Bitcoin mining company is deeply investing in AI infrastructure, with its second-quarter financial report released in August showing a development pipeline of approximately 8.7 gigawatts, an increase of about 300 megawatts quarter-over-quarter.

Anthropic is negotiating to directly lease up to 1GW data center

According to The Information, citing informed sources, the artificial intelligence company Anthropic is in talks with data center operator Stream Data Centers to directly lease up to 1GW of data center computing power. The two parties are still in early negotiations, and the final scale has not yet been determined, with the deal possibly not being finalized. If signed, Anthropic will directly become a tenant of the data center and deploy its own servers and chips. The related equipment may include TPUs from Google and Broadcom, and may also use NVIDIA GPUs. Google is also discussing providing credit guarantees for some projects. This is different from renting servers from AWS or Google Cloud, as Anthropic can control the chips, racks, and network equipment itself, paying less in cloud vendor profits but needing to bear the costs of equipment procurement and data center operations.Data center developers interviewed by The Information estimate that a complete computing infrastructure of 1GW scale requires at least $40 billion in capital investment. Anthropic has already directly leased approximately 401MW of data center from TeraWulf this year and announced a partnership with Fluidstack last year to invest $50 billion in building a custom data center. If the deal with Stream reaches 1GW, it will become one of Anthropic's largest direct data center leases to date.

first_img In the second quarter, 45 data center projects in the United States were hindered, with a scale reaching 68 billion dollars

Data Center Watch data shows that from April to June, approximately 45 data center projects in the United States were halted or delayed due to opposition from local residents and communities, with a total value of $68 billion. The agency added that communities across the country are now pushing for bans on new data center construction, often taking action even before developers apply for relevant permits. In the first quarter of this year, a total of 75 data center projects in the United States faced opposition, involving approximately $130 billion. The 45 projects affected in the second quarter accounted for more than half of all large new projects tracked during the same period. This year, state legislatures in about 30 states have proposed or passed regulations related to data center siting, electricity, and water usage. Currently, there are 843 groups opposing data centers across 49 states in the U.S., excluding Hawaii.Miquel Vila, Chief Analyst at Data Center Watch, stated: New opposition groups are continuously emerging, and opposition actions are appearing in more and more states and local government jurisdictions, with the number of signatures on online petitions also steadily increasing. A petition opposing a data center project in Tennessee has garnered over 500,000 signatures on Change.org. The agency reported protests against data centers outside the United States for the first time, specifically mentioning several countries in Europe, as well as Australia and South Africa.
