first_img The largest cryptocurrency exchange in the Philippines, Coins.ph, is reportedly facing regulatory action from the central bank

According to two informed sources, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the Philippines, Coins.ph, is facing punitive actions from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP). The alleged violations reportedly involve providing services to offshore betting companies, with a severity that could lead to the revocation of the operating license for this 12-year-old company. One source stated that this would trigger an "earthquake" in the Philippine crypto ecosystem.Coins.ph has over 18 million customers and a 24-hour spot trading volume of approximately $50 million, controlling about 75%-80% of the liquidity of pesos and stablecoins in the Philippines. Earlier this month, the BSP reportedly imposed restrictions on deposits made through Coins.ph's main wallet company, DCPay Philippines. Previously, several compliance executives from the exchange left, including Chief Compliance Officer Lexi Herrera, Head of Anti-Money Laundering Transaction Monitoring Chris Beaño, and Money Laundering Reporting Officer Irish Calagui.A year ago, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas restricted the use of e-wallet applications for gambling, requiring regulated entities to cut off access to gambling websites within the apps. Subsequently, several betting entities migrated to Coins.ph. This restriction is not a temporary measure and no reasons have been provided. Coins.ph is one of the earliest crypto wallets and exchanges in the Philippines, acquired by Indonesian tech company Gojek for $95 million in 2019, and later sold to former Binance CFO Wei Zhou. Neither Coins.ph nor the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas responded to requests for comment.

The signing ceremony was held at SKY 31 in Seoul, attended by Space Network CEO Tae Lim Oh and HQ Company CEO Yongsoo Samuel Cho.According to the agreement, Space Network will provide access to the Freeport network, technical hardware, software, and ongoing engineering support, while HQ Company will be responsible for local sales, customer acquisition, spectrum authorization, and regional service implementation. This agreement adds to the $100 million agreement signed by Space Network with Vietnam's DETI Technology in June 2026, bringing the total commercial pre-purchase amount to $150 million.Freeport is built and operated by Space Network, currently featuring 4 low Earth orbit satellites, with plans to expand to approximately 230 satellites by the time commercial services launch in 2029. Operators can purchase regional capacity and build their own services on the open network, with nodes settling through on-chain contracts. The related project Spacecoin combines blockchain protocols with low Earth orbit satellites for service pricing and payments within the network.

first_img The Central Bank of the Philippines plans to freeze the registration of payment operators for 12 months, tightening VASP regulation

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has released a proposed announcement to suspend the acceptance of new applications for registration of payment system operators (OPS) for 12 months and to implement stricter controls on payment arrangements involving virtual asset service providers (VASP). The BSP stated that this move aims to conduct a comprehensive review of its classification and licensing framework.According to the draft, during the suspension period, the BSP will stop accepting and processing OPS applications. Applications submitted prior to the suspension can continue to be evaluated, but will not be approved or rejected until the suspension ends. Relevant entities are prohibited from conducting business activities that require OPS registration unless they obtain special authorization from the regulatory agency. In addition, BSP-regulated entities providing merchant acquiring services must connect licensed VASPs through direct merchant arrangements, and such relationships will be subject to enhanced due diligence, transaction and settlement limits, and other risk control measures. This requirement applies to virtual asset enterprises licensed, registered, or authorized by the BSP, the Securities and Exchange Commission of the Philippines, or other regulatory agencies, with VASPs being categorized alongside betting, gaming, adult industry, and money service businesses. If the draft is ultimately approved, it will take effect 15 days after publication, and the BSP is currently seeking public comments.
