first_img A memo from allies of Trump names Anthropic CEO, viewing him as a representative of the AI apocalypse theory

Axios reported that allies of Trump are attacking Dario Amodei, the CEO of the artificial intelligence company Anthropic, as a representative of the "doomsday" narrative surrounding artificial intelligence and one of the founders of the effective altruism movement. Sources say that during the midterm elections, allies may target Anthropic when countering his warnings about AI safety; due to his political stance and concerns about AI safety, he is seen as an easy target. This is concerning for investors as the company is preparing for an anticipated record-breaking initial public offering. The report states that a memo began circulating internally within the White House this week, attempting to portray effective altruism as a fringe, cult-like group detached from mainstream America, with Axios claiming to have obtained the document. The memo was written by a Trump political advisor not currently employed by the White House, stating that effective altruism "has established a doomsday pipeline for artificial intelligence," placing Amodei at the foundational position of the movement, while also mentioning his sister, Daniela Amodei, president of Anthropic, referring to these connections as "Anthropic nodes." A source close to the government said that Amodei embodies an ideology and globalist innovation path that contradicts the president's "America First" agenda.Anthropic has been distancing itself from effective altruism. Daniela Amodei stated in a 2025 Wired report that she does not agree with the term. Dario Amodei has insisted in interviews that he is not a member of the movement and has promoted the benefits of artificial intelligence.

first_img White House crypto advisor denies Trump's crypto interests hindered the Clarity Act

Patrick Witt, the Executive Director of the White House Digital Asset Advisory Committee, defended President Trump's cryptocurrency connections at the Financial Markets Quality conference held at Georgetown University on Wednesday, denying that his personal crypto interests led to the failure of the Clarity Act in the Senate last week. He stated that the Democrats have politicized the issue and questioned why the recently passed housing bill did not require strict government ethics review provisions. The negotiations for the Clarity Act have consistently failed to bypass ethical controversies, which target conflicts of interest in cryptocurrency held by senior government officials, with Trump being a primary target.Witt stated that Trump agreed to two unprecedented ethical provisions: in addition to ultimately being willing to accept rules mandating the divestment of crypto assets or placing them in a blind trust, the White House is also prepared to concede by allowing state attorneys general to sue him if the federal government fails to address ethical violations. He also mentioned that the accusation of Trump having a conflict of interest while controlling crypto assets and leading digital asset policy is "quite ironic," as several senators on the banking committee involved in the discussions hold and actively trade stocks of financial services companies they regulate.Witt's main responsibility is to push the Clarity Act into law, which faced setbacks in the Senate last week. He stated at the CoinDesk policy and regulatory event on Tuesday that the focus is not on the year-end lame duck session, but rather on the core work shifting towards federal regulatory agencies like the Securities and Exchange Commission. He also accused banking lobbyists of pushing to shelve the bill due to concerns that stablecoin rewards might compete with interest-bearing bank deposits, claiming that this opposition was initiated by large banks and spread to community banks.

U.S. Republican Senator John Curtis called for an investigation into Donald Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden, involving cryptocurrency business

U.S. Senator John Curtis from Utah, a Republican, wrote to Chuck Grassley, the Chairman of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, and Dick Durbin, the Chief Minority Whip, calling for an investigation into whether Donald Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden exploited their presidential family connections for personal financial gain, and requested subpoenas for both individuals. Curtis pointed out that Donald Trump Jr. had accepted wedding gifts from Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev, actively promoted family-backed cryptocurrency ventures, and served as an advisor for a prediction market platform; the related companies are regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Donald Trump stated that his son has returned the relevant funds to Umar Kremlev.Curtis also called for an investigation into Hunter Biden's substantial business dealings with foreign entities, as well as whether the two utilized their relationship with the president to create commercial value. He mentioned that Joe Biden pardoned Hunter Biden in December 2024, who had previously denied involving his father in business transactions. A week prior to this investigation call, Senate Republicans failed to garner enough Democratic support to advance the Digital Asset Market Clear Act. Some Democratic senators opposed the bill, citing reasons including Donald Trump's use of cryptocurrency ventures to gain benefits related to the presidency; Donald Trump disclosed that he earned $1.4 billion from digital asset-related businesses in 2025.
