first_img Zakura released the experimental P2Pv2, and the testnet is now running in dual stack

Zakura has announced an experimental network layer P2Pv2 for Zcash nodes, intended to replace the old protocol inherited from Bitcoin. This layer combines high-throughput networking, resource control, and a consensus engine tested for properties, allowing developers to add services without permission. Zakura states that approximately 50,000 transactions per second require each full node to continuously receive about 100MB/s of block data, while the 25-second block of NU7 can carry a maximum of 2MB, with existing network throughput differing by more than a thousand times from this rate. Tachyon can reduce the proof after entering the block, but the network still needs to propagate a large number of individual transactions.P2Pv2 replaces the protocol stack from about a decade ago with protocols that can be optimized for latency, throughput, or robustness, allowing a secure connection to carry multiple independent services. The transport layer uses its own zakura-quic, based on quinn-proto, utilizing QUIC and TLS 1.3, and authenticating peers with Ed25519 node identity. Related changes remove the dependency on Iroh, allowing nodes to configure socket buffers, flow control windows, timers, and connection admission before the TLS handshake. The new transport directly connects to peer addresses without using relays, external address lookups, automatic port mapping, or QUIC NAT traversal. Nodes sign identities, addresses, protocol scopes, and service IDs, allowing clients to find peers based on specific services. The independent component zakura-header-chain verifies block headers and retains competing branches in a directed acyclic graph, selecting the best qualified chain. Block synchronization schedules requests based on the delivery rates measured by each peer, and a verified commitment tree is used to skip the reconstruction of Sapling, Orchard, and Ironwood trees for each block. Currently, the Mainnet still defaults to the old P2P stack, while the Testnet and Regtest run dual stacks by default, with the native protocol version being p2p-v2/3. Zakura notes that P2Pv2 still has known denial-of-service risks and has not yet become a hardened trust boundary; production hardening, resource control, and block relay protocols are still in progress.

first_img The Zcash development team plans to allocate independent keys for each ZEC exchange to prevent quantum cracking

The Zakura team, which operates the Zcash network, released a technical article stating that they plan to allocate a unique viewing key for each ZEC exchange completed through NEAR Intents, in order to block future quantum computers from exploiting public refund addresses to piece together user payment histories. NEAR Intents supports cross-chain token exchanges, and when users exchange the privacy coin ZEC for USDC, the service will publish a Zcash address for the user on the NEAR public blockchain, which will be used to return any unused ZEC.The Zcash address contains a public key generated by the wallet's viewing key, which cannot be reverse-engineered by ordinary computers, but large quantum computers running Shor's algorithm could theoretically deduce the key from the address. Zcash wallets can generate multiple seemingly unrelated addresses, but they typically share the same viewing key. Once an attacker cracks it, they can associate all payments received by the account and read the amounts and notes. Zakura's solution allocates a unique viewing key for each exchange, while the spending key remains in the user's main account. Even if the future refund address is compromised, the attacker would only be able to see payments related to that specific exchange. This design also addresses a practical issue: wallets conducting hundreds of exchanges would generate hundreds of keys, requiring each key to scan the entire Zcash chain during backup recovery. Zakura's solution is a privately queryable database that uses private information retrieval technology, so when the wallet inquires about the refund destination, the database will not know the address being queried. Zakura claims that wallets built on its open-source library (including Vizor) will be able to add this feature in the coming weeks, and hardware wallets will follow after firmware support, ahead of the January quantum-resistant payment target set by Zcash developers this month.

first_img The decentralized exchange THORChain has launched native Zcash trading

Decentralized exchange THORChain announced that native Zcash swaps are now live, allowing users to exchange ZEC with assets on other supported blockchains without relying on wrapped tokens or centralized exchanges. This launch follows the protocol's 3.20 update, which introduced support for Zcash and Monero. At that time, the liquidity in the Zcash pool exceeded $50,000, and the network has begun processing real ZEC swaps. The pool is currently in a soft launch phase, with performance being monitored. If vulnerabilities or other issues arise, trading may be temporarily paused. The current pool size can easily support five-figure trades, while larger trades will experience higher slippage and slower settlement until liquidity increases. When the fee-to-depth ratio is sufficiently high, the protocol's own liquidity will automatically join the Zcash pool. This mechanism was introduced with the 3.20 upgrade, allowing the protocol to deploy a portion of liquidity fees (initially set at 20%) to supported liquidity pools. After integration, ZEC holders can swap their native assets with supported assets such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoins without needing to deposit Zcash with a centralized custodian or convert it into wrapped assets on other networks. Zcash brings the total number of native blockchains in THORChain's cross-chain liquidity network to 14, with swaps settled in native assets on their respective chains, rather than transferring assets through cross-chain bridges or requiring users to relinquish custody.

first_img Zcash developer program supports quantum-resistant signatures in January, initial protection for transparent transactions

The Zcash development team plans to add post-quantum signature support to the network in January. Zakura engineer Roman Akhtariev stated in an engineering blog that the team plans to implement post-quantum signature opcodes in Zcash in January. These opcodes will enable Zcash to verify hash-based signatures, thereby resisting quantum computing attacks. The team has not yet confirmed a specific network activation date. This upgrade aims to prevent attackers from using current public keys to reverse-engineer and forge payment authorizations from wallet owners. The initial phase of this upgrade will protect transparent transactions. Zcash has two payment methods: shielded payments hide the sender, receiver, and amount; transparent payments are similar to Bitcoin, where addresses and amounts are visible on the chain. According to CoinDesk, based on ZecStats data, approximately 11.96 million of the 16.98 million issued ZEC are stored in the transparent pool, accounting for about 70%. The January plan primarily targets this public portion. Additionally, Zakura has developed a private query tool that allows wallets to check balances without exposing associated addresses to the server; the experimental version is available in the "Private queries" settings of the Zcash wallet Vizor. Before the release of Zakura's engineering article, Ethereum researcher Justin Drake warned holders on Thursday to prepare for what he called "bunker mode," stating that in the worst-case scenario, AI could find shortcuts to break the mathematical protections of Bitcoin and Ethereum wallets in "months rather than years."

first_img Zcash Advocacy Organization PGPZ registered lobbying, focusing on U.S. cryptocurrency policy

According to Cointelegraph, the advocacy organization focused on Zcash, Pretty Good Policy for Zcash (PGPZ), has submitted a lobbying registration, with the registration effective date of October 1. Executive Director Divij Pandya is the sole registered lobbyist. This move indicates that this privacy-oriented cryptocurrency ecosystem is intensifying efforts to influence U.S. digital asset policy. The registration documents include the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act and two digital asset tax proposals as part of its current and anticipated lobbying agenda. PGPZ was established in June of this year, evolving from the Pretty Good Policy for Crypto initiative launched by Electric Coin Co. in 2022, which held a Washington policy roundtable and organized a congressional briefing on cryptocurrency technology in 2023.PGPZ founder and ZODL Chief Policy and Regulatory Officer Paul Brigner stated that the goal is "to ensure that Zcash has serious, organized, and credible policy participation in Washington." He noted that the decisions being made by policymakers will affect whether privacy-preserving digital cash can exist, be used legally, and serve the public interest. PGPZ's responsibility is to ensure that Zcash is understood, represented, and defended in these discussions. In August of this year, Zcash Community Grants approved a $750,000 grant to fund PGPZ's work for its first year.
