first_img Meta tests robots handling data center work, raising concerns about layoffs

Meta is testing robots for maintaining its artificial intelligence system data centers, including machines for replacing network cables, rebooting servers, and inspecting equipment. According to WIRED, Meta has tested robots from San Francisco's Watney Robotics, Quebec's Kinova, and Zurich's ABB to reduce labor costs. An employee estimated that a successful cable replacement robot could replace up to 80% of the work in certain positions, but the machine currently cannot match human speed.Meta's robotics program has raised concerns, with employees believing that automation may reduce the demand for experienced technicians and shift remaining work to low-wage positions operated by AI instructions. A Meta spokesperson stated that the U.S. is experiencing the largest infrastructure boom since World War II, with a severe shortage of skilled workers, and the company needs more workers, not fewer. Currently, robots still require human supervision and face challenges with obstacles, battery life, visual inspections, and handling dense cabling.Nvidia and Alibaba are also developing systems to improve robot training. ACE Robotics Chairman Wang Xiaogang stated that embodied AI could experience a "ChatGPT moment" by the end of 2027. Additionally, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates proposed taxing robots and AI tokens, believing that the current tax system may make machines cheaper than employees.

first_img Term Finance permanently closes Meta Vaults after governance attack, resulting in a loss of approximately 8.5 million USD

The development team of Term Finance, Term Labs, announced that after the governance attack incident, all Term Meta Vaults have been permanently closed, DAO governance rights have been revoked, but the withdrawal channel remains open. In an update on August 23, Term stated that this closure is irreversible and permanently prevents subsequent deposits, but did not disclose the scale of the remaining assets in the vault, only indicating that it will "explore pathways" to address any gaps, and the amount that depositors can recover remains undecided.Blockchain security company PeckShield estimates that the attacker stole approximately 2,843 ETH (worth about $6.87 million at the time) and 1.68 million USDC (which was later exchanged for about 1.68 million DAI), with total losses estimated at around $8.5 million. On-chain records confirm the related transfers: one transaction transferred 2,841.74 WETH to an address labeled "Term Finance Exploiter 1" by Etherscan, while another transaction transferred 1.68 million USDC to an address labeled "Term Finance Exploiter 2".Yearn stated that Term's vault contract uses its V3 architecture, but the attack occurred on Term's custom governance wrapper, which is not applicable to standard Yearn vaults. Term indicated that, according to the current investigation, its underlying protocol and direct lending market were not affected and is working with external security teams for remediation and recovery, but did not provide any compensation commitments or timelines.

According to TrendForce, at Hot Chips 2026, Micron emphasized that the progress of AI computing power is faster than storage improvements, and the challenge of the "storage wall" is becoming increasingly prominent. Micron Fellow Raghu Sriramaneni pointed out that the computing power of AI accelerators increases approximately threefold every two years, while the bandwidth of HBM increases by less than double during the same period, and the gap may further widen. The deepening reliance on HBM also brings reliability issues; Micron cited Meta Llama 3 data indicating that HBM failures account for about 17% of unexpected training interruptions. New designs that blur the boundaries between computing and storage may help break through the bottleneck.The expansion of HBM also brings area and supply pressures: the latest generation of packaging integrates two GPUs with eight 12-layer HBM4 stacks, with storage accounting for about 90% of the semiconductor area, more than eight times the area occupied by GPUs; achieving equivalent capacity with HBM requires about three times the wafers of standard DDR5 DRAM. Thermal management has also become a key constraint, with solutions such as liquid cooling and ultra-thin chips being explored.Micron is advancing innovations in interconnect, packaging, and cooling, including SerDes and die-to-die PHY optimized for storage, larger size SiP and advanced packaging with glass substrates, as well as liquid cooling and hybrid bonding, and is developing fusion bonding to reduce thermal resistance and enhance data throughput.
