BNEF: U.S. data centers may account for 20% of electricity consumption by 2035, Bitcoin mining companies are accelerating the shift to AI computing power

Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) latest forecast shows that by 2035, electricity consumption by data centers in the United States will account for about 20% of the nation's total electricity consumption, a significant increase from the current level of about 5.9%. The agency has raised its forecast for data center electricity demand in 2035 to 106 GW, which is 36% higher than the 78 GW predicted in April this year. Currently, the operating capacity of data centers in the U.S. is about 40 GW, accounting for approximately 3.5%-4% of the national electricity demand, while under BNEF's baseline scenario, this proportion is expected to reach 8.6% by 2035. The high-growth model from the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) indicates that if the combined effects of cryptocurrency mining and AI computing power are taken into account, the upper limit of this proportion also points to 20%.In response to the explosive growth in AI computing power demand, Bitcoin mining companies are actively transforming. Companies like Core Scientific and Riot Platforms have partnered with tech giants such as AWS and Google to convert their existing mining sites into AI data centers. Currently, Bitcoin mining companies have secured about 6 GW of electricity capacity, which is expected to expand to 12 GW by 2027, with some analysts estimating that about 20% of mining companies' computing power capacity will shift towards AI workloads by then. Data from the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) shows that data centers now account for about 90% of local large load applications, with many sites originally used for cryptocurrency mining being repurposed as AI computing facilities. This trend is also directly reflected in the capital markets, as Core Scientific has seen a significant rebound in its stock price after emerging from bankruptcy and partnering with AI cloud service provider CoreWeave.

macOS malware can bypass Telegram's two-factor authentication to steal cryptocurrency wallets and account permissions

According to FinanceFeeds, security researchers have discovered an information-stealing malware targeting macOS devices that is attacking cryptocurrency users. This malware can hijack Telegram Desktop sessions, steal passwords and wallet databases, further controlling user accounts and stealing digital assets. Currently affected wallets and applications include software wallets like Exodus, Atomic, Electrum, Wasabi, and Monero.The malware is capable of extracting sensitive information from macOS Keychain, Safari Cookies, Apple Notes, Telegram Desktop, and multiple cryptocurrency wallet-related databases, including login credentials, authenticated session files, wallet data, and browser extension information. Security analysis points out that the danger of this attack chain lies in its reliance not on a single wallet vulnerability, but on collecting various types of data from the device, linking device intrusion, account takeover, wallet cracking, and mnemonic phrase theft together. Among these, Telegram Desktop sessions have become a key target.Attackers can copy authenticated Telegram local session data and restore the login on another Mac device without needing to enter a phone number, verification code, or Telegram two-factor authentication password. This means that Telegram 2FA cannot provide complete protection in this attack scenario, as the attacker is not performing a new login but is exploiting an already trusted local session. For cryptocurrency users, the risks are further amplified. Since Telegram is widely used for exchange customer service, project communities, OTC trading, and wallet communication, once attackers gain access to user session permissions, they could impersonate the victim, read private chats, locate asset information, and even spread malicious links to contacts.

Circle had previously banned accounts of crypto funds supported by Tether, but later received an arbitration ruling in support

According to the Financial Times, based on the latest publicly available court documents, the stablecoin issuer Circle had banned the crypto fund Heka Funds, supported by Tether, at the end of 2023 due to suspicions that it was manipulating the market through large-scale arbitrage operations and helping Tether expand its market share. The documents show that during the Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) crisis in 2023, USDC briefly fell below the $1 peg. Heka continuously bought discounted USDC in large quantities and redeemed it for cash from Circle. Circle believed that Heka's redemption scale far exceeded that of other market participants and suspected that the related funds ultimately flowed to Tether to help expand its USDT market size.Arbitration documents also revealed that Tether had invested about $800 million in Heka, accounting for about 75% of the fund's assets, and waived the stablecoin minting fees. The arbitrator found that Heka did not truthfully disclose its supportive relationship with Tether and was aware that the related information would raise concerns for Circle. In 2024, Heka initiated arbitration due to its account being frozen, claiming approximately $49 million in lost profits. In February of this year, the arbitrator dismissed all of Heka's claims, determining that it had engaged in malicious behavior and ordered it to pay Circle about $166,000 in attorney and expert fees. Heka denied any market manipulation and stated that it had never been subject to regulatory investigation; Circle declined to comment, and Tether did not respond to media requests for comment.

Over 1.2 million leveraged retail accounts in South Korea have triggered margin calls, with approximately 320,000 to 360,000 accounts being fully liquidated by brokers
