first_img Due to heavy investments in Samsung and SK Hynix, South Korea's largest pension fund suffered a loss of over 130 billion dollars

According to data recently released by financial data provider FnGuide, as of October 15, the total estimated value of shares held by the National Pension Service (NPS) in 287 listed companies with a holding ratio of 5% or more has shrunk from 515.93 trillion Korean won at the end of June to 333.53 trillion Korean won, a decrease of approximately 182 trillion Korean won, equivalent to about 13.7 billion USD.The shrinkage is mainly related to the fund's heavy holdings in Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. The market value of SK Hynix held by NPS has evaporated by approximately 74.2 trillion Korean won, while the market value of Samsung Electronics has decreased by 56.9 trillion Korean won, with these two stocks accounting for about 72% of the total decline in market value.NPS is the largest pension fund in South Korea, managing assets worth 1866 trillion Korean won, approximately 1.35 trillion USD, as of the end of June. The investment return rate in the first half of this year reached 27.2%, the best level for the same period since 2022, but the market reversed in just a few months, marking the first quarterly decline in market value for its core heavy holdings since the fourth quarter of 2024.NPS has long listed Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix as its top two domestic stock holdings, maintaining a holding ratio of over 7%. In May of this year, the fund's operating committee also raised the year-end target allocation for Korean stocks. After reaching a peak in June, stock prices quickly corrected, and by mid-October, SK Hynix had fallen more than 50% from its peak, while Samsung Electronics had retreated about 40%.The concentrated sell-off by foreign investors has been the direct driver of the decline, with the two companies accounting for nearly 80% of the total net selling by foreign investors. Market discrepancies regarding AI storage prosperity, advancements in Chinese storage technology, and the high volatility of individual stock leveraged ETFs have also amplified the declines. The KOSPI index in South Korea reached a historical closing high of 9114.55 points on June 22, but had fallen by about 39% as of October 15. During this period, NPS's holding ratio of SK Hynix shares decreased from 7.5% to 7.32%, while the holding ratio of Samsung Electronics remained at 7.84%.Bank of America’s research report on October 16 suggests that the valuation of storage stocks may have bottomed out after about three and a half months of adjustment, and that storage chip prices and profits are still expected to remain high from 2027 to 2028. There are also views warning that if global AI companies cut capital expenditures, there may still be room for downward adjustments in the earnings expectations of the two companies. As of now, NPS has not made a formal response regarding the significant shrinkage in market value of its holdings.

Hardware wallet distributor CryptoBilis announced the suspension of Ledger device sales to cooperate with the investigation into financial losses

Hardware wallet dealer CryptoBilis announced that, due to Ledger investigating a case involving fund losses for Southeast Asian users, the company has suspended all sales and shipments of Ledger devices and is cooperating with Ledger's investigation. Ledger previously stated that it is investigating reports of fund losses from Southeast Asian users who purchased products from this dealer, and as a precaution, has requested CryptoBilis to suspend the sales and shipments of related devices, advising users who purchased devices in the past 90 days not to set them up if they have not completed initialization.CryptoBilis reminds users who have completed setup to follow Ledger's advice and transfer their assets to a new Ledger signing device generated with a new mnemonic phrase. It emphasizes that the mnemonic phrase must be generated by the device during initialization and handwritten by the user; if the device comes with a pre-printed or written mnemonic card or paper, or if the mnemonic has been seen by others, the wallet should be considered unsafe, and users should not disclose their mnemonic phrase or PIN to anyone. The notice also warns to be cautious of third parties claiming to assist in recovering lost funds, as such proposals are often scams. For users who have already experienced fund losses, CryptoBilis recommends contacting their official customer service channels and providing the order number, purchase time and location, device serial number, affected wallet address, and transaction ID, while keeping the device and packaging, not resetting or discarding them, and suggests reporting to the police. The company stated that it will not send users links requesting them to connect wallets, input mnemonic phrases, or install software.

China Merchants Yonglong Bank reviews mainland investors' zero balance non-active investment accounts, which have not submitted declarations or face suspension and closure

On August 21, China Merchants Yonglong Bank issued a notice to customers, stating that it is cooperating with the latest risk management and account compliance guidelines from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority and the Securities and Futures Commission to conduct a comprehensive optimization and review of investment accounts for mainland investors. Upon verification, all investment accounts held by relevant customers (including wealth management, securities, and/or paper gold passbook accounts) as of May 22, 2026, have no asset balance, and there have been no investment transaction records in the past 12 months, which have been classified as "zero balance non-active investment accounts."To maintain normal account operations, the bank requires customers to submit the "Non-Active Investment Account Declaration" as soon as possible. Customers can complete the submission through the pop-up in the personal account section of the China Merchants Yonglong Bank mobile app; joint account holders or those who have not registered for the mobile app can call the customer service hotline for guidance, and each joint account holder must submit separately. The main content of the declaration includes confirming the accuracy of personal information, the legality of the source of funds, that the account has not been closed or suspended due to suspicious documents, and timely notification of any changes in information. The bank reminds that if customers fail to complete the submission in a timely manner, new investment transactions (including buying stocks, subscribing to wealth management products, etc.) will be suspended accordingly; if the submission continues to be delayed, it is expected that starting from November 2026, relevant "non-active investment accounts" may be closed. Once an account is suspended or closed, no new securities or wealth management product investment transactions can be conducted.

Liang Wenfeng is dissatisfied with the leak of the 4-hour internal speech, and DeepSeek announced the suspension of the second round of financing

According to Bloomberg, DeepSeek announced the suspension of its second round of financing and verbally notified some potential investors that it would not sign investment agreements as expected. This suspension partly stems from founder Liang Wenfeng's dissatisfaction with the leak of a 4-hour internal transcript during its first financing deal, where he made 52 statements in an investor meeting regarding DeepSeek's organizational culture, open-source logic, technology roadmap, and views on the competitive landscape of the industry. The nearly 4-hour meeting record recently went viral on social media, including statements such as "The biggest gap between China and the U.S. in AI is computing power resources." Both DeepSeek and Liang Wenfeng have not confirmed the authenticity of the leaked record.DeepSeek stated that it may still choose to resume the transaction process in the future and has begun preparations for an initial public offering, with the IPO potentially being filed as early as this year.DeepSeek completed its first round of external financing in June 2026, raising over 50 billion yuan, approximately 7.4 billion dollars, with a post-investment valuation of about 50-59 billion dollars. It adopted a special structure, with most funds entering a limited partnership managed by Liang Wenfeng, where investors have no voting rights and are locked in for 5 years. Liang Wenfeng himself contributed about 20 billion yuan as the largest contributor, with participation from Tencent, CATL, JD.com, NetEase, and the Chinese National AI Fund. DeepSeek subsequently initiated discussions for its second round of financing in mid-July, targeting a valuation of about 71 billion dollars.
