U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has prohibited all Pentagon personnel from using non-public information to place bets on upcoming military operations, involving prediction market platforms such as Kalshi and Polymarket. In a memo sent to senior Pentagon officials and defense agencies on Tuesday, he stated that all Department of Defense personnel are prohibited from using non-public information for financial transactions, with the relevant restrictions covering both classified and unclassified information.Austin wrote in the memo that adversaries will observe movements in these markets, and the safety of U.S. military personnel often depends on the enemy not knowing what is about to happen. He also pointed out that, aside from operational security, financial betting can distort judgment: a logistics personnel betting on the date of an operation will be concerned about that date, and an analyst holding a position on the outcome will also be concerned about that outcome. Before this directive was issued, U.S. Army soldier Gannon Ken Van Dyke was charged in April for allegedly profiting over $400,000 on Polymarket by using classified information regarding the operation to capture Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro. Prosecutors claimed he participated in the planning and execution of the operation and used advance knowledge to bet on the outcome of Maduro's ousting; he pleaded not guilty to all charges. In February, Israeli authorities also arrested and charged a military reservist and a civilian for allegedly using classified information to bet on events related to Israeli strikes against Iran on Polymarket.

first_img The U.S. Department of Defense has been reported to request OpenAI to provide a special version of AI with the "lowest rejection rate" for military commands

Documents obtained by The Intercept through a lawsuit under the Freedom of Information Act show that the U.S. Department of Defense once requested OpenAI to provide a version of artificial intelligence specifically tailored for the military, with a "very low refusal rate" for commands. This statement appeared in the updated contract for the 2025 prototype agreement "P00003," which is a two-year agreement worth up to $200 million, covering logistics, intelligence decision-making, and operational uses. OpenAI, Google, xAI, and Anthropic all agreed to develop such militarized prototypes in 2025.OpenAI spokesperson Nate Evans stated that the company never agreed to contract terms that included a "very low refusal rate," and the relevant documents were early drafts from the Department of Defense, with the final executed contract not containing that statement. Department of Defense spokesperson Jacob Bliss also indicated that the phrase did not appear in any current contracts. The Intercept pointed out that the documents obtained were not marked as drafts; a Department of Justice lawyer representing the Pentagon once confirmed that the document was a signed executed version, but later requested to disregard that confirmation and stated that further investigation was needed. The latest contract signed on February 27 allows OpenAI services to be deployed on military classified networks, with similar delivery terms completely redacted. OpenAI stated that it has drawn a red line regarding autonomous killing and surveillance of Americans, but the contract text allows the government to determine any use as legal.

The "Pizza Index" shows fluctuations again, with orders from stores around the Pentagon soaring to 227%

The "Pizza Index," humorously referred to as the "barometer" for U.S. military actions, has once again shown abnormal fluctuations. The latest data from the monitoring account Pentagon Pizza Watch indicates that the order volume at the Domino's Pizza located about 1.4 miles from the Pentagon surged to 227% of normal levels on Monday evening, raising the alert level to "DOUGHCON 4."Comparing with surrounding stores, some pizza shops reported being "exceptionally busy," while others remained "quiet" or closed, displaying a structural increase in volume. The relevant monitoring model suggests that the sudden spike in orders in this area is typically associated with increased overtime work within the Pentagon.Historically, the "Pentagon Pizza Index" has shown unusual movements before several significant international military actions. Abnormal changes in this index were observed prior to the U.S. military action against Venezuela in January this year, as well as during the escalation of tensions involving Iran.Market analysis points out that the logic behind this index is based on the assumption that when the Pentagon's high-level operations center is dealing with sudden international crises or military deployments, staff work longer hours, leading to a significant increase in nighttime delivery orders. Therefore, this data is viewed by some observers as an alternative forward-looking signal of geopolitical risk. Currently, there has been no official statement from the U.S. regarding related military movements. The market is closely monitoring the evolution of the situation in the Middle East and potential risks of military escalation.
