first_img Gemini's stock price has fallen 80% since its IPO, and acquisition speculation has resurfaced

According to CoinDesk, the stock price of the cryptocurrency platform Gemini has fallen by about 80% since its listing, with its market value dropping from a peak of approximately $4 billion to $753 million. Trading volume, revenue, and platform assets have all continued to decline, leading to renewed speculation about a potential acquisition. Gemini's exchange revenue in the second quarter decreased by 38% year-on-year to $12.5 million, spot trading volume fell by 66% to $3.8 billion, and platform assets decreased from $18.2 billion to $8.4 billion.Lorenzo Valente, Director of Digital Asset Research at ARK Invest, posted on X last month that the offshore perpetual contract platform Hyperliquid should acquire Gemini, using it as a gateway to enter the regulated U.S. market for perpetual contracts and prediction market business. The Winklevoss brothers hold 94.5% of the voting rights in Gemini, which may simplify transaction negotiations but also means that any sale must be approved by both individuals. There are currently no signs that Hyperliquid is actively pursuing an acquisition.Despite the decline in exchange business, Gemini still holds regulatory licenses and approvals that are difficult for competitors to replicate. Potential buyers may weigh the cost of acquisition against the time and legal fees required to apply for licenses independently. This aligns with the trend in cryptocurrency mergers and acquisitions where buyers increasingly value regulatory infrastructure, distribution channels, and market access, such as Keyrock's acquisition of BlockFills' trading assets and Ondo exploring an acquisition of up to $500 million. CoinDesk reported in April that potential buyers were considering acquiring Gemini's closed European and UK operations to obtain licenses. Gemini declined to comment on this.

first_img Ripple: Asset management institutions are preparing for the payment upgrade Batch V1.1 of the XRP Ledger

According to CoinDesk, Ripple stated that asset management companies and other commercial projects are preparing to use the Batch V1.1 feature of the XRP Ledger. This feature allows up to eight transactions to be combined into a single operation and ensures that all transactions either succeed or fail in an all-or-nothing manner, avoiding situations where one party completes settlement while the other fails. This upgrade is expected to support Delivery Versus Payment (DVP) transactions, allowing asset transfers and payments to be completed simultaneously, while also enabling exchanges, wallets, and market platforms to directly attach service fees to customer transactions for processing.RippleX Engineering Director Ayo Akinyele mentioned that some projects are already being developed around Batch, and once activated, it will bring related work closer to a production environment. Specific partners and launch times will be announced once plans are finalized. The amendment has received support from 30 of the 35 tracked validators on the XRP Ledger, exceeding the 28 votes required to enter the activation countdown. The countdown began on September 15, and if the validator support rate remains above 80% within 14 days, Batch V1.1 is expected to be activated shortly after September 29.Previously, researchers discovered serious flaws in the Batch V1 signature verification process in February, which could prematurely stop checking signatures under certain conditions, allowing attackers to unauthorizedly include transactions from other accounts. The developers subsequently withdrew the original version. Since the amendment had not yet been activated at that time, the vulnerability code did not run on the live ledger, and no funds were exposed.

first_img Binance launched wealth management services, listing 11 U.S.-listed ETFs

Cryptocurrency exchange Binance has launched a wealth management service, providing users access to 11 U.S.-listed exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that focus on short-term U.S. Treasury bonds and investment-grade bonds. The new Binance Earn product categorizes the ETFs into three types based on investment duration (ranging from less than six months to over a year): cash management, stable income, and enhanced yield.Users can browse available ETFs and place orders through Binance Earn, with the purchasing process completed via the exchange's stock trading service. Binance states that investors can receive economic benefits from the stocks, including price fluctuations and cash dividends. Unlike tokenized stocks, users purchase actual ETF shares through this service. Binance provides the interface, while Nest Trading routes orders to Alpaca Securities for trade execution and securities custody. This wealth management service is Binance's latest initiative to expand its traditional financial business. Earlier this month, the exchange added physical delivery options for over 1,000 U.S. stocks and ETFs, with its existing stock products already covering more than 7,000 stocks and ETFs. A survey by PwC last year showed that over 80% of respondents believe tokenization will enhance the global coverage and 24/7 accessibility of the ETF market within the next three years.
