first_img Bitcoin's correlation with gold has risen to a six-year high, Bitwise states that depreciation hedging trades are making a comeback

Bitwise's latest report shows that the correlation between Bitcoin and gold has risen to a six-year high. Bitwise's Head of Research for Europe, André Dragosch, stated that the last time the correlation reached this level was in 2020, during the period of multiple fiscal and monetary stimulus following the COVID-19 pandemic; meanwhile, the correlation between Bitcoin and the stock market has dropped to a one-year low, suggesting a decoupling between hard assets and the stock market. The report believes that the simultaneous rise of Bitcoin and gold is due to the "substantial intervention in the macro picture" by the U.S. government. Last month, the U.S. Treasury announced it would more than double the scale of government debt buybacks, leading to a weakening of the dollar, and investors flocked back to gold and Bitcoin; in the same week, U.S. public debt surpassed $40 trillion for the first time, further undermining market confidence in the dollar. Bitwise stated that investors are no longer entangled in whether to hedge against currency depreciation with gold or Bitcoin, but are holding both simultaneously, and pointed out that "Bitcoin has been priced as a risk asset for its first fifteen years, and if this correlation trend continues, the next fifteen years could be very different."Driven by this, Bitcoin rose again this week, increasing nearly 6% within 24 hours, with the price briefly approaching $81,438.

first_img The strengthening of the Japanese yen suppresses the US dollar index, benefiting Bitcoin and gold in the short term

The Japanese yen has recently strengthened significantly against the US dollar, with the USDJPY exchange rate falling 1.4% to 156.4, continuing a 0.9% decline from Wednesday. The US Dollar Index (DXY) subsequently dropped 0.4% to 99.22, testing its 200-day moving average around 99.1. Against this backdrop, Bitcoin and gold have risen in tandem, contrasting with the traditional understanding that "a stronger yen usually triggers risk-off selling."Analysis indicates that the strength of the yen is beneficial for Bitcoin primarily because it has lowered the US Dollar Index, and a weaker dollar typically supports dollar-denominated assets and eases global financial conditions. However, if the yen's appreciation accelerates, this dynamic may quickly reverse. Over the past decade, traders have borrowed large amounts of cheap yen to make bullish bets on stocks, bonds, and even cryptocurrencies; a disorderly appreciation of the yen could trigger the unwinding of these positions, leading to risk aversion. The rapid appreciation of the yen has previously put pressure on Bitcoin, most notably during the yen carry trade unwinding in August 2024, when Bitcoin fell about 20% within a few days. Currently, traders are increasing their bets that the Bank of Japan will raise interest rates from 1% to 1.25% at the meeting on September 18, and it has been reported that US and Japanese authorities have previously intervened to support the yen, suggesting that there is little resistance to further strengthening of the yen.

first_img Catastrophe bonds are set to go on-chain, with the first tokenization issuance test scheduled for 2027

The law firm Harneys and the tokenization platform droppRWA plan to issue the first catastrophe bond that directly records ownership on the blockchain, with the first trading target set for early 2027. This structure will make the blockchain a legally enforceable record of ownership, with investor registration, qualification review, and payment processes all placed within the same system, reducing reconciliation time from several days to seconds, provided that the necessary regulatory approvals are obtained. The catastrophe bond market is a $65.6 billion market that allows insurance companies, reinsurance companies, and government agencies to transfer natural disaster exposure to capital market investors. The tokenized asset market has nearly tripled in the past year to over $33 billion, and Citigroup expects this sector to reach $5.5 trillion by 2030. The second quarter of 2026 is projected to be the largest quarter in catastrophe bond issuance history, with 48 transactions issuing a total of $11.3 billion, and the Bermuda Stock Exchange accounted for 93% of global catastrophe bond issuance in 2025.To lower the investment threshold, investors will not directly purchase catastrophe bond notes, which typically have a minimum denomination of $250,000, but instead purchase beneficial interests in vehicles that hold the bonds and pass through the returns, with the minimum investment amount expected to drop to $5,000. The project is still subject to applicable regulatory requirements and approvals, and any platform administrator role must be licensed under Bermuda's Digital Asset Business Act 2018.

first_img Google disassembles retired servers to recycle DDR4 in response to memory shortages

Google's Senior Director of Supply Chain Infrastructure, Nikhil Cherian, revealed that to overcome memory bottlenecks, Google is developing software and hardware solutions and dismantling retired servers to recycle DDR4 components to establish an internal recycling supply chain. Google has designed special hardware adapters to connect the previous generation DDR4 to the new generation of AI servers while importing retired servers to remove their DDR4 modules for recycling.Cherian stated that the AI industry has rapidly shifted from being compute-constrained to memory-constrained, with high-performance memory accounting for about 75% of the bill of materials cost for a given AI server. A Goldman Sachs report indicated that memory prices will continue to rise in the third quarter, with personal computer DRAM prices expected to increase by 18% to 23% and server DRAM prices expected to rise by 13% to 18%. Trendforce data shows that in August, the spot market prices for DDR4 8GB and DDR5 8GB rose to $142 and $133, respectively. The two TPU ASICs launched by Google this year have been optimized for memory design, claiming to reduce memory demand to one-sixth of the original. The TPU8i chip features a dedicated layered memory design that relies on a high-speed DDR5 memory architecture to perform host-level tasks, with each chip equipped with 288GB of HBM3e high-bandwidth memory.
