The mastermind behind the armed robbery of a cryptocurrency practitioner in Singapore was sentenced to 12 years and 11 months in prison and received 24 lashes

According to the United Morning News, seven Malaysian gangsters targeted players attending a poker game, breaking into a luxury private residence in Bukit Timah late at night, armed and stealing over 4.9 million dollars, quickly splitting into two groups to escape Singapore. Six of them pleaded guilty in the High Court on Monday (September 14), with the two masterminds sentenced to 12 years and 11 months in prison, 24 strokes of the cane, plus a fine of 4,000 dollars. In court, it was revealed that the masterminds, Wu Wentong (30 years old) and Huang Zhishan (35 years old), learned from a friend who had previously attended the poker game that the house often held poker games at night. After scouting the location, they discovered that the front door of the house would not be locked during the game. Wu Wentong and Huang Zhishan then recruited five other accomplices, specifically coming to Singapore to commit the crime. This armed robbery occurred around 2 a.m. on April 18, 2024, at a residence in the upscale Alper Wang Garden area, where 11 men and women were playing poker in the living room.According to the case details, around March 2024, Wu Wentong and Huang Zhishan decided to rob the poker players at the house due to financial issues. They knew that they could not carry out such a large-scale robbery with just the two of them, so they contacted Hamidun, who runs a private security company and provides debt collection services, to help gather a team, promising a reward of 1.5 million ringgit (approximately 470,000 Singapore dollars). After the group succeeded, they left in a multi-purpose vehicle, splitting into two groups to leave Singapore via the Tuas and Woodlands checkpoints. At the same time, several players in the private residence managed to free themselves from their restraints and reported the robbery to the police. With the assistance of the Royal Malaysia Police, the six defendants were arrested between late April and November 2024 and were extradited to Singapore for prosecution. The police have since recovered virtual currency worth 1.69 million dollars, while the remaining funds and property are still missing.

Malone Lam, the mastermind behind the theft of 240 million USD in BTC, will attend a plea agreement hearing this Tuesday

According to Apnews, a young cryptocurrency scam gang stole over 4,100 BTC in August 2024 through "social engineering" attacks, which was worth over $240 million at the time. After the theft, gang members quickly began extravagant spending, including purchasing sports cars, renting luxury homes, flying on private jets, and hiring security personnel. Among them, the alleged mastermind, a 22-year-old Singaporean named Malone Lam, reportedly spent over $569,000 in one night at a nightclub in Los Angeles.Investigations revealed that the suspects impersonated employees from Google and the cryptocurrency trading platform Gemini to trick victims into giving up their Google Drive access and security codes, allowing them to transfer the victims' bitcoins. They then moved the funds through multiple trading platforms and money laundering intermediaries. Their lavish lifestyle eventually drew the attention of law enforcement. One suspect was exposed when their IP address was revealed while hiding nearly $30 million in stolen cryptocurrency assets, leading police to trace it back to the luxury home they rented in California. Another suspect was found with $37 million worth of stolen cryptocurrency assets. Lam was accused of using the stolen funds to purchase a $2 million watch and over 30 vehicles including Porsches, Lamborghinis, and Ferraris.Currently, 18 defendants have been charged, and Lam is expected to attend a plea agreement hearing this Tuesday. The U.S. Department of Justice has already issued rulings against several accomplices, and related cases are still ongoing.

Insiders: DeepMind founder Hassabis is considering leaving Google, as Google's management is concerned about a sharp drop in stock prices and has postponed his departure

Citrini analyst Jukan shared content on platform X stating that industry insiders reported that Google DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis had previously planned to leave simultaneously with another co-founder, David Silver. However, Google management was concerned that this news could trigger a significant drop in stock prices, so they hoped to delay his departure. Reports indicate that after Google announced related adjustments, the company's stock did indeed decline. Ultimately, Hassabis was persuaded to take on the role of chairman of DeepMind to help facilitate a smooth transition and create space for a more appropriate departure from Google in the future. It is reported that as David Silver shifts to founding Ineffable Intelligence and John Jumper joins Anthropic, the core AI research and development force at DeepMind is undergoing changes. Some insiders believe that the center of gravity for AI model development at Google has now shifted more towards the Bay Area, leading to a decline in the importance of DeepMind. Internally, Google is focusing on the large language model Gemini to catch up with OpenAI and Anthropic. Hassabis's adjustment reflects a long-standing strategic contradiction within Google: researchers are more focused on long-term scientific breakthroughs, while the commercial team is more concerned with AI products that can be quickly commercialized to drive revenue and stock price growth. Market predictions suggest that Hassabis may leave Google within a year and could potentially start a new venture.
