first_img Reports indicate that Moon's Dark Side is seeking to rent advanced chip computing power from NVIDIA in Europe

CNBC cited four informed sources reporting that the Chinese artificial intelligence startup Dark Side of the Moon had discussions this year with several emerging cloud service providers operating data centers in Europe, seeking to rent computing power provided by NVIDIA GPUs. Three of the sources stated that Dark Side of the Moon primarily sought to rent NVIDIA's latest Blackwell series chips; one source indicated that the two parties had discussed renting a computing cluster deployed in Europe, consisting of 8,000 or more Blackwell chips. The sources said that Dark Side of the Moon mainly hopes to utilize these chips for AI model inference while also intending to acquire model training computing power. The United States currently prohibits the export of NVIDIA's most advanced AI chips to China, but existing laws have not granted regulatory agencies broad authority to restrict Chinese companies from remotely using these chips through overseas cloud services. Some cloud service providers and financing institutions, concerned about the U.S. tightening remote usage restrictions, have sought to charge higher advance payments, with proposals requiring Dark Side of the Moon to pay advance payments 30% to 50% higher than those of non-Chinese clients. Dark Side of the Moon was established in 2023 and owns the Kimi series models.

first_img A Canadian man was extradited to the United States for hijacking a supercomputer at an American university for mining

According to Decrypt, the U.S. Department of Justice announced on Tuesday that a Canadian man has been extradited to the United States, facing charges of assisting in the intrusion of university computers, stealing login credentials, and secretly mining cryptocurrency.A federal grand jury in the Western District of New York indicted 35-year-old Ryan James Roach, a resident of Saskatchewan, and 41-year-old Mathiew James Stubbings, a resident of Ontario, on charges including conspiracy to obtain and damage protected computer information, obtaining protected computer information, and intentionally damaging protected computers, which could result in a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The indictment shows that between June 2016 and December 2019, the two targeted U.S. educational institutions with supercomputers, first researching their cybersecurity weaknesses before executing the intrusions. Once inside the systems, they allegedly deployed malware, stole login credentials, and forced the victims' computers to mine for them.Victims included institutions in New York, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Massachusetts. The two reportedly used virtual private servers registered under false names in multiple countries to send malware and mining programs and store stolen credentials, while also forwarding attacks through other victims' compromised computers to hide their identities.Roach was extradited from Canada on October 28 and was arraigned in Rochester, New York, where he is currently detained awaiting a detention hearing. Extradition proceedings for Stubbings are still ongoing in Canada. This case falls under cryptocurrency hijacking, where attackers use others' computers to mine, leaving the victims to bear the electricity costs and suffer performance degradation. The Department of Justice did not specify the particular cryptocurrencies mined by the two.Google's Threat Intelligence team released a report on Monday stating that attackers are expected to increasingly prioritize LLMjacking over traditional resource thefts like cryptocurrency hijacking, which involves hijacking corporate access to AI models and shifting the billing.

Binance disclosed the process of 6.3 billion dollars being stolen: hackers lurked for 4 months and breached 3 computers

The cryptocurrency exchange platform Binance released a preliminary investigation report on a security incident, disclosing the attack process in which approximately $6.3 billion in assets were stolen. The report states that an engineer, referred to as Little A, from the wallet operations team, searched for and installed an AI programming tool in June 2026, downloading a tampered Homebrew installation package from the search results. After the security team discovered the anomaly, they replaced the relevant equipment, but Little A still exposed the wallet infrastructure permissions. The report indicates that the attacker continued to lurk thereafter. In September, the attacker contacted a software engineer, referred to as Little B, through a recruitment platform, posing as a project director, and conducted video interviews and social media interviews, sending a code repository as an assignment. Little B downloaded the repository to their work computer and set it up according to the instructions. One file of 3,414 bytes bypassed terminal security protections and used internal AI tools to find traces related to Little A.The report states that on October 30, the attacker logged into another employee, referred to as Little C's, computer and transferred $6.3 billion. Binance stated that approximately $6.34 billion in assets were affected, with about $2.85 billion frozen or intercepted, and the losses covered by the SAFU fund and company funds. As of October 31, 98% of the affected tokens have been replenished.

first_img Elon Musk mocks Sam Altman: Idle DRAM in home computers is a waste

Elon Musk mocked OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on X with a meme regarding the idle memory of home computers. In an interview on the YouTube channel Cheeky Pint, Altman stated that from a global resource allocation perspective, allowing the world's limited DRAM supply to sit idle in personal computers and only being used 5% of the time is "quite bad." In a constrained supply environment, it should be maximized in the cloud, but many people's intuition is contrary to this.Musk posted a meme of the Nazi officer Hans Landa, played by Christoph Waltz in "Inglourious Basterds," on Sunday, captioned "You are withholding DRAM and not giving it to the cloud, right?" and wrote, "People should also have their own RAM!"This clash is a continuation of the long-standing conflict between the two OpenAI co-founders. The two co-founded OpenAI in 2015 with others, and Musk left in 2018. Musk sued OpenAI and Altman in 2024, accusing them of deviating from the nonprofit mission of the open organization; in May of this year, a federal jury in California dismissed the $150 billion lawsuit, ruling that OpenAI, Altman, and President Greg Brockman bore no liability on all counts. Altman also attributed part of the memory shortage to the caution of storage manufacturers, stating that in the past, DRAM producers "invested $20 billion in capital expenditures but only earned $19 billion," and companies that experienced previous overcapacity cycles are slow to expand production.

Star Market Chip Design Q3 Report: 67 Companies with Revenue Growth, Storage and Computing Power Lead

According to statistics from Cai Lian She Venture Capital Tong, 76 chip design companies on the Sci-Tech Innovation Board have disclosed their third-quarter reports, among which 67 companies have positive revenue growth (accounting for 88.16%), and 53 companies have positive net profit attributable to shareholders (accounting for 69.74%). The industry as a whole is recovering, with storage and computing power becoming the two main lines of performance elasticity. The storage segment performed outstandingly, with Changxin Technology achieving revenue of 269.024 billion yuan in the first three quarters, a year-on-year increase of 738.5%; Baiwei Storage reported revenue of 21.717 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 230.3%; and Dongxin Co., Ltd. reported revenue of 3.292 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of approximately 475%.
