first_img Key components surge in price, PC brands accelerate the introduction of domestic storage from Changchun and Changxin to reduce costs

According to the Industrial and Commercial Times, due to the soaring prices of key components such as memory and SSDs, the cost pressure for configuring high-capacity storage in mainstream laptops has greatly increased. Cost-effective mainland Chinese memory and storage components are gradually penetrating the PC supply chain, with brands such as Lenovo, ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, Acer, and even the American brand Apple accelerating the certification, introduction, or platform tuning of related products. The report pointed out that Lenovo has expanded its use of mainland components this year, and recently flagship laptop models equipped with Yangtze Memory Technologies (YMTC) SSDs have appeared on North American cross-border e-commerce platforms. The American brand Apple is also reported to be negotiating with the U.S. government to procure Changxin Memory Technologies (CXMT) memory to cope with the rising prices. In terms of Taiwanese board manufacturers, MSI recently announced that it is the first to complete the verification and tuning of Changxin Memory DDR5 chips on the AMD platform at DDR5-8000+, while Gigabyte has also adopted Changxin Memory chips in some motherboard models. ASUS and Acer have introduced memory modules from mainland manufacturers such as BIWIN through their own brand memory certification or OEM models.Industry analysts believe that although the short-term imbalance in supply and demand for storage has prompted non-mainland brands to accelerate related certifications, due to the limited production capacity of mainland manufacturers, brand Taiwanese manufacturers still emphasize that Korean original manufacturers with long-term contracts remain the main supply partners at present.

Goldman Sachs released a report on China's AI computing power, predicting that by 2026, the market share of domestic chips will exceed 50%

According to the Goldman Sachs report on "China's AI Computing Power" disclosed by P Equity Research, China is accelerating the construction of a national computing power network, with related infrastructure projects expected to attract 7 trillion yuan in investment by 2026. In the next five years, investment in data centers is projected to reach about 2 trillion yuan. Currently, funds and technology are being massively transferred to western computing power hubs, while data centers in first-tier cities are transforming to focus on ultra-low latency computing, edge nodes, and AI inference. Although GW-level clusters with over 100,000 chips remain scarce domestically, in typical GW-level computing power parks, workloads are primarily composed of inference, which accounts for more than half, as well as training and full-stack R&D.The report predicts that by 2026, the market share of domestically produced AI acceleration chips is expected to exceed 50%. Among them, Huawei and Alibaba's Pingtouge lead the domestic camp with shares of 20% and 7%, respectively, but Nvidia currently maintains overall market dominance with a 55% share. In terms of cost and performance, domestic chips have capital expenditures on IT power consumption that are 40% to 50% lower than imported chips, but due to performance gaps, their capital expenditures per unit of computing power are 2 to 4 times that of imported chips, and the computing power generated per unit of power consumption is only 10% to 30% of that of imported chips. Additionally, the daily average token output of Huawei's 910B/910C servers is about one-sixth to one-third of that of Nvidia's H800, resulting in significantly lower API profit margins based on that hardware compared to peers using Nvidia hardware.

GameStop plans to make a takeover bid for eBay

According to informed sources, GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen is planning to make a takeover bid for the e-commerce platform eBay, which has a market value of about $45 billion, with the aim of transforming it into a retail giant worth over $100 billion, while GameStop itself currently has a market value of only about $11 billion. After the news broke, eBay's stock price surged over 10% in after-hours trading, while GameStop rose about 5%. Sources also revealed that GameStop has quietly increased its stake in eBay and may submit a bid as early as later this month. If the eBay board rejects the offer, Cohen may launch a tender offer directly to eBay shareholders.Cohen made it clear earlier this year that he is looking for significant acquisition targets in the consumer and retail sectors, attempting to expand the company's business beyond video games and collectibles. He recently adjusted the compensation plan, which could allow him to earn up to $35 billion in stock returns if the company's market value reaches $100 billion and other conditions are met.As of the end of March, GameStop held about $9 billion in cash, a significant increase from $4.8 billion in the same period last year, providing ammunition for this "snake swallowing elephant" acquisition. eBay's stock price has risen over 50% in the past 12 months, and in February of this year, it acquired the second-hand fashion platform Depop for $1.2 billion, indicating that its core strategy focusing on collectibles and fashion is beginning to show results.GameStop investor Michael Burry, the real-life inspiration for the movie "The Big Short," has also publicly called for the company to use its cash reserves for transformative acquisitions. Since joining the board in 2021 and becoming chairman, Cohen has garnered a large following of enthusiastic supporters due to his commitment to turning the company around, and he is expected to leverage the massive online fanbase to generate momentum for this deal.
