first_img The Zcash development team plans to allocate independent keys for each ZEC exchange to prevent quantum cracking

The Zakura team, which operates the Zcash network, released a technical article stating that they plan to allocate a unique viewing key for each ZEC exchange completed through NEAR Intents, in order to block future quantum computers from exploiting public refund addresses to piece together user payment histories. NEAR Intents supports cross-chain token exchanges, and when users exchange the privacy coin ZEC for USDC, the service will publish a Zcash address for the user on the NEAR public blockchain, which will be used to return any unused ZEC.The Zcash address contains a public key generated by the wallet's viewing key, which cannot be reverse-engineered by ordinary computers, but large quantum computers running Shor's algorithm could theoretically deduce the key from the address. Zcash wallets can generate multiple seemingly unrelated addresses, but they typically share the same viewing key. Once an attacker cracks it, they can associate all payments received by the account and read the amounts and notes. Zakura's solution allocates a unique viewing key for each exchange, while the spending key remains in the user's main account. Even if the future refund address is compromised, the attacker would only be able to see payments related to that specific exchange.This design also addresses a practical issue: wallets conducting hundreds of exchanges would generate hundreds of keys, requiring each key to scan the entire Zcash chain during backup recovery. Zakura's solution is a privately queryable database that uses private information retrieval technology, so when the wallet inquires about the refund destination, the database will not know the address being queried. Zakura claims that wallets built on its open-source library (including Vizor) will be able to add this feature in the coming weeks, and hardware wallets will follow after firmware support, ahead of the January quantum-resistant payment target set by Zcash developers this month.

first_img Claude of Anthropic cracked the 25-year puzzle of NSA's elliptic curve

Anthropic's AI model Claude cracked a 25-year-old puzzle in the field of cryptography in less than 30 minutes, tracing a set of numbers provided by the National Security Agency (NSA) to the U.S. government in the late 1990s back to a common random number generator that used timestamps from 1997 and 1998. These numbers have long been suspected of hiding a backdoor.In 2000, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) adopted a set of elliptic curves provided by the NSA, but the NSA never explained where the partial numbers (seeds) used to generate these curves came from. After Edward Snowden disclosed that the NSA had attempted to undermine cryptographic standards, suspicions about its hidden backdoors intensified. Cryptographers Neal Koblitz and Alfred Menezes discussed this controversy in a 2015 paper, and security researcher Steve Weis spent years searching for answers. In 2023, Filippo Valsorda and others even set up a bounty for this.Claude traced the five NIST curve seeds back to the random number generator lrand48 in an old C software library and reproduced the widely used P-256 curve sequence, finding an exact match with the published seeds among the 1842 candidates. Anthropic stated that this significantly reduces the possibility of hidden weaknesses, and users of NIST curves do not need to make any changes. Bitcoin is unaffected, as its wallets use the simpler secp256k1 curve, which has almost no room for secretly implanted weaknesses. The bounty of $36,864 will be donated to the nonprofit organization Internet Security Research Group behind Let's Encrypt.

first_img The U.S. Department of Justice arrested two people and seized 187 devices to crack down on North Korean notebook farms

On October 13, the U.S. Department of Justice announced the arrest of two Americans in an operation targeting North Korean IT personnel who entered U.S. companies under false identities, and the seizure of approximately 187 computer devices. Michael James Bostelle from Pennsylvania and Juan Cecilio Pena Carrillo from Texas were arrested based on an indictment from the Northern District of Ohio Federal Court. Prosecutors allege that the scheme involved over 70 U.S. employers, generating approximately $3 million in revenue for overseas IT personnel. The two are charged with conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and conspiracy to commit identity theft, with Pena additionally charged with aggravated identity theft.The device seizure operation is part of "Operation Lone Star," coordinated by federal law enforcement in the Northern District of Texas. From September 21 to 25, the FBI executed searches at over 40 suspected "laptop farm" residences in Texas, seizing devices including laptops and keyboards, video, and mouse equipment for remote access. According to the Ohio indictment, domestic accomplices received laptops issued by employers at home and then allowed overseas personnel to control them via remote access software or hardware, making it appear as if they were located in the U.S. and accessing company systems, while the accomplices received salaries and transferred funds overseas.The indictment mentions cryptocurrency as one of the means for transferring funds overseas. Trey Michael Nolte, a resident of Ohio, is listed as a co-conspirator but has not been charged in this case; the indictment states that in a conversation on July 8, 2024, he described managing transfers between bank accounts and virtual currencies using spreadsheets, subsequently transferring funds to the defendant Sun Sheng Ming;

Hunan Public Security in China cracks down on virtual currency pig-butchering scams: 2 suspects have been criminally detained according to the law

According to a report from the Public Security Bureau of Linwu County, Hunan Province, on August 19, 2026, the Public Security Bureau of Linwu County, Chenzhou City, Hunan Province discovered fraud clues during routine inspections and successfully cracked a virtual currency investment fraud case, arresting two criminal suspects.Upon investigation, on May 1, 2026, the suspect Li met the victim, Ms. Yue, through private messages on a social platform, falsely claiming to teach virtual currency investment skills with guaranteed profits. He induced her to download a certain app to purchase Tether (USDT) and then exchange it for a newly issued virtual currency manipulated by his "superior." Li, in collusion with his "superior," created the illusion of rising prices to lure the victim into increasing her investment; once the funds were in place, they quickly crashed the market, causing the virtual currency's value to drop to zero. Ms. Yue lost approximately 30,000 yuan, while Li illegally profited tens of thousands of yuan, which was collected by his friend Lei and squandered.On August 19, the investigating police arrested Li; on September 17, Lei, who was suspected of collecting the stolen funds, was also apprehended. Both have been criminally detained according to the law. The police remind: virtual currency is not legal tender, and there are no "guaranteed profit" projects. Recommendations for high returns made through private messages online are all fraud traps. Do not easily trust investment recommendations from strangers or transfer money to unfamiliar platforms.

The U.S. Department of Justice cracks down on the Xinbi scam service market, seizing $52 million in cryptocurrency assets

According to a notice from the U.S. Department of Justice, the Department's Fraud Center Strike Force, in coordination with the Department of the Treasury, took coordinated law enforcement action against Xinbi Guarantee, seizing and restricting the disposal of over 52 million dollars in cryptocurrency in a single day, bringing the total assets restricted by the task force to approximately 938 million dollars. Tether provided proactive assistance in this investigation.The Department of Justice alleges that Xinbi is an illegal scam service market primarily operating through Telegram, providing customized investment scam websites, money laundering services, and recruiting victims of human trafficking to work in scam parks in Southeast Asia. Law enforcement has seized its Telegram channel and two cryptocurrency wallets holding approximately 12 million dollars, and restricted the disposal of an additional 47 related wallets.At the same time, the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control designated Xinbi as a significant transnational criminal organization and sanctioned two additional entities that support it. The task force also assisted Madagascar in shutting down 13 scam parks operated by Chinese criminal groups, processing over 3,200 electronic devices, and local authorities arrested nearly 400 people.

first_img The United States' crackdown on Iranian oil tankers has driven up oil prices, while Bitcoin has fallen nearly 1% to $79,700

Bitcoin price fell nearly 1% to around $79,700, as escalating conflicts between the United States and Iran pushed oil prices higher. The U.S. Central Command confirmed on Saturday that it struck three Iranian oil tankers located near Halk Island, Jask, and the Gulf of Oman. Admiral Brad Cooper stated that if Iran attacks U.S. vessels, the U.S. will impose a higher economic cost.The U.S. Central Command updated maritime blockade data, stating that since resuming operations on July 14, it has redirected 92 merchant ships, disabled 3, and boarded 2 for inspection. Oil prices rose by 1% in both the U.S. and European markets, with WTI at $92.72, marking a cumulative increase of over 6% in the past seven days. The rise in oil prices could exacerbate global inflation, making it more difficult for central banks, including the Federal Reserve, to cut interest rates.Additionally, the U.S. employment data for August released last Friday was stronger than expected, reinforcing expectations for an interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve. However, Trump immediately posted on Truth Social calling for a rate cut, stating that a strong nation means lower interest rates. This uncertainty may dampen risk appetite for Bitcoin and the broader market. Furthermore, late Sunday night, the Liquid Network, used by exchanges as a settlement layer, suffered a $320 million attack.

The Interpol Operation Jackal IV has arrested 58 people, focusing on cracking down on investment fraud such as cryptocurrency scams

According to IT Home, the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) has announced the results of the new anti-fraud operation "Jackal IV." This operation will last from November 2025 to June 2026 and involves 22 countries and regions worldwide, focusing on combating online financial crimes such as romance scams, cryptocurrency and investment fraud, email scams, and money laundering. A total of 58 people were arrested in this round of operations, and the identities of 263 individuals involved have been confirmed.Among them, the Argentine police seized a "Crime-as-a-Service" (CaaS) network that provided website domain and money laundering services, arresting 17 people and confirming the identities of 196 individuals involved. The South African police raided 7 locations in Johannesburg, arresting 39 suspects accused of romance scams and investment fraud targeting retirees from English-speaking countries, while seizing $2.67 million and freezing 257 bank accounts.In addition, the Italian police confirmed one suspect involved in a cross-European money laundering network, discovering that a single bank account was linked to money laundering transactions amounting to €845,000; the Romanian police dismantled an investment fraud gang, arresting 11 people and seizing illegal assets such as cash, cryptocurrency, and real estate.

Analysis: The "crack spread" in the energy market has reached a record expansion, and Bitcoin may face new pressures

According to CoinDesk, as crude oil prices retreat, refined oil prices continue to rise, with the "crack spread" between U.S. diesel and crude oil reaching $102.2 per barrel, a record high.Due to disruptions in global energy supply from the Iran and Ukraine conflicts, diesel supply is tightening, and with the current agricultural harvest season, the demand for fuel for agricultural equipment such as tractors is strong, further pushing up diesel prices, which may transmit inflation through food, transportation, and heating costs.Meanwhile, WTI crude oil prices have broken through the downward trend line formed since the peak in April, indicating that the four-month downward trend may be coming to an end. If oil prices continue to rise, market inflation expectations may heat up again. The combination of energy prices and inflation risks, along with concerns about government debt, is driving up U.S. Treasury yields and the yields of other developed economy bonds, increasing the opportunity cost of holding risk assets like Bitcoin, which may limit further upside for BTC.However, the weakening dollar still provides some support for Bitcoin. The dollar index fell to 99.29 on Monday, a two-and-a-half-month low, and broke below the previous upward trend line. Currently, Bitcoin is being influenced by multiple factors including oil prices, bond yields, and dollar trends, with the macro environment showing clear divergence.
