Optimism governance vote sparks controversy: 5.469 million OP tokens transferred from user airdrop to ecological fund

According to CoinDesk, a governance proposal from the Optimism community has been approved, reallocating 546.9 million OP tokens originally planned for user airdrops to the "Strategic Ecosystem Fund" managed by the Optimism Foundation, sparking discussions in the community about governance transparency and user rights. The OP tokens involved account for approximately 12.7% of the total supply, valued at about $49.7 million at current prices. The Optimism Foundation stated that as the ecological strategy shifts towards institutional adoption and corporate partnerships, large-scale user airdrops are no longer fully aligned with the current development direction. Unused tokens can be utilized for ecosystem incentives, partnership building, and enterprise-level project expansion. The final vote resulted in 17.974 million OP in support and 10.931 million OP against the proposal.A key turning point occurred 16 minutes and 52 seconds before the voting ended, when the Optimism core development team Test in Prod (delegate.testinprod-io.eth) cast 8.486 million OP in support, raising the approval rate from 45.77% to 61.84%, ultimately pushing the proposal through. If the vote from Test in Prod were excluded, the support rate for the proposal would only be 46.47%, which would not have passed, and the related tokens might have remained in the user allocation pool. The Optimism Foundation previously committed to disclosing the cumulative usage of the fund and related results through an annual budget report. This vote has also reignited discussions about the influence of "large delegated voting rights" in DAO governance and the balance of rights for token holders.

The Trump Meme Coin controversy escalates, U.S. senators request SEC to investigate Rug Pull risks

According to CNN, U.S. Democratic Senators Elizabeth Warren and Richard Blumenthal have requested the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to investigate the Meme coin TRUMP issued by Trump, to confirm whether the project involves fraud or improper profit-making. In a letter to SEC Chairman Paul Atkins, the two stated that the Trump Meme coin project "may constitute an illegal scam" and urged the regulatory agency to investigate whether the token involves "illegal fraudulent activities or facilitates improper profit acquisition."Reports indicate that Trump launched his personal Meme coin TRUMP just days before his inauguration in 2025. After the token went live, its price surged, reaching a market value peak of approximately $9 billion on January 19, 2025, but then plummeted significantly. Currently, the market value of the token has fallen to less than $400 million, a decline of over 95% from its peak. According to data from the cryptocurrency data platform CoinMarketCap, investors who bought at the high are currently facing about a 97% loss. Blockchain analytics firm Nansen previously cited data showing that by the end of June, nearly 1 million investors had incurred losses due to this Meme coin, with total losses amounting to approximately $3.8 billion. About 80% of the supply of the Trump Meme coin is held by entities related to the Trump Organization. Trump has previously stated that he complies with the law and allows his family to manage personal financial matters.Elizabeth Warren and Richard Blumenthal emphasized in their letter whether the project is similar to a Rug Pull in the cryptocurrency industry. They believe that even if it is not a traditional sudden withdrawal scam, it may still fall under a "soft pull" that leads to investor losses through a gradual withdrawal of market support. The SEC has not yet commented on this matter.

first_img Coinbase CEO responds to Base community controversy: personal posts are not investment advice and will not endorse any tokens

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong posted on X in response to the recent controversy sparked by his profile picture change and the voices from the Base community feeling insufficiently supported. Armstrong made it clear that his personal X account should not be viewed as investment advice or a signal source for individual tokens; he simply shares content online that he finds interesting or funny, and he may not be aware of whether the content relates to a specific token or project. His posts and profile picture do not constitute endorsement or commitment.Armstrong pointed out that Base is committed to building financial services infrastructure, covering tokenized stocks, lending protocols, stablecoin payments, and even meme coin trading. He supports economic freedom and user freedom to trade, but treating his X account as a trading signal is a risk users must bear, which also goes against his own wishes. Regarding support from the Base team or Coinbase, Armstrong stated that many tokens cannot be listed on centralized exchanges due to compliance and regulatory reasons, "If you hope Jesse or I can help pump or call certain tokens, we will not do that."The ways Coinbase has committed to support include hosting offline Base Batches events, providing funding to promising developers, investing in quality projects through Coinbase Ventures and the Base ecosystem fund, and regularly integrating promising Base DeFi protocols into Coinbase products. Currently, the post has over 1.05 million views.

hot_img The South Korean Financial Commission responds to the controversy over single-stock leveraged ETFs: there is indeed an effect in preventing capital outflow, but it is not the main cause of stock market volatility

The Financial Services Commission of South Korea responded positively to the recent controversies surrounding single-stock leveraged exchange-traded funds (ETFs) when it released supplementary regulatory measures. Byeon Je-ho, the Director of the Capital Markets Bureau of the Financial Services Commission, clearly stated that launching leveraged ETF products targeting single stocks such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix in the domestic market has indeed had a significant effect in locking in domestic investment demand and preventing capital outflow to overseas leveraged markets like Hong Kong or the United States. In response to external accusations that single-stock leveraged ETFs are the "main culprit" behind the recent increase in volatility in the South Korean stock market, the Financial Services Commission refuted this claim. Byeon Je-ho pointed out that the recent dramatic market fluctuations cannot be solely explained by leveraged ETFs, with the core reason being the alternating expectations of the global semiconductor industry cycle. Data shows that from May 26 to July 10, the annualized daily return volatility of U.S. SanDisk (131%), Micron (123%), and Japan's Kioxia (118%) was higher than that of South Korea's SK Hynix (113%) and Samsung Electronics (96%). Additionally, some investors' contrarian operations have played a role in stabilizing stock prices to some extent.Regarding the demands from some politicians and market participants to "forcefully delist single-stock leveraged ETFs," the Financial Services Commission clearly rejected this request. The official explanation stated that delisting must meet statutory termination criteria such as a sharp decline in market value or a lack of liquidity providers (LPs), and currently, the market is showing signs of heating up due to excessive demand, which does not meet the delisting conditions. The Financial Services Commission indicated that such calls should be understood as the market's urgent expectation for strengthened compliance and robust regulatory measures.

first_img Cap team responds to Stabledrop controversy, admits early commitment errors and clarifies insider rumors

In response to the recent market controversy regarding the reduction of Stabledrop shares, Cap founder Benjamin issued a statement of apology and provided a detailed response. He stated that the team prematurely committed to an airdrop scale of 11 million before the funding was fully secured, but subsequent changes in the market environment led to a fundraising amount that fell short of expectations, resulting in the actual airdrop pool shrinking to 4.2 million. To avoid substantial principal losses for early YT (Yield Token) holders, the team temporarily adjusted the originally planned linear distribution scheme to a "capital protection but no profit" restructuring model, ensuring that no one incurs losses. This rule applies equally to all wallets. Meanwhile, in response to community concerns about a related whale address allegedly engaging in "internal score manipulation," Benjamin clarified that the wallet belongs to a former colleague and is not operated by the team, and that project treasury funds have not been utilized. Additionally, he emphasized that the Cap protocol is still operating healthily, and the decline in TVL that occurred over the weekend was mainly due to the surge in USDM lending rates on Aave for MegaETH, causing arbitrageurs to exit, which is unrelated to this airdrop incident. All redemptions have been processed smoothly.

The second front of the encryption bill has opened, with tax policies focusing on the controversy over deferring taxes on mining and staking profits

According to CoinDesk, major lobbying organizations in the U.S. cryptocurrency industry jointly sent a letter to the House Ways and Means Committee, urging the advancement of the "Tax Clarity for Mining and Staking Act," advocating for tax treatment options for cryptocurrency miners and staking income recipients. The bill was introduced by Republican Congressman Mike Carey, and its core content allows taxpayers to choose the timing of taxation when they receive new mining or staking assets—either paying taxes at the time the assets are generated or deferring taxes until the final sale.Industry associations, including the Blockchain Association, Digital Chamber, and Crypto Council for Innovation, have expressed support, arguing that the current tax system may force users participating in network security maintenance to bear tax burdens before they have realized the assets. Supporters claim that the proposal does not provide "indefinite deferral," but rather avoids immediate taxation on income that has not yet realized liquidity, thereby alleviating cash flow pressure on miners and validators. However, Democratic lawmakers and some external critics are concerned that this mechanism could be exploited by large mining companies for long-term tax deferral, especially in the context of some publicly listed or politically connected companies participating in mining operations, raising potential policy arbitrage disputes. Meanwhile, the industry's focus remains on the broader "Digital Asset Market Structure Act" (Clarity Act), but tax issues have become the second key battleground, expected to continue advancing in tandem with regulatory framework legislation in the coming weeks.
