HP and Dell are concerned about circuit board supply in 2027, Amazon invests in Jinxing Electronics

The shortage caused by the AI boom has extended from GPUs and memory to circuit boards. When planning their supply chains for 2027, HP and Dell found that even previously inconspicuous printed circuit boards could face shortages. In September this year, Amazon invested approximately 1.59 billion New Taiwan Dollars in Taiwanese circuit board manufacturer Gold Circuit Electronics, transitioning from customer to shareholder.AI servers require circuit boards with more layers and lower signal loss, and chip packaging substrates are becoming larger, driving up the demand for key materials such as specialty fiberglass cloth and copper-clad laminates. Suppliers prioritize fulfilling more profitable AI orders, squeezing ordinary servers, with some ordinary server circuit board delivery times approaching one year.It is difficult for the production capacity of key materials to keep up with demand in the short term. TrendForce estimates that Japan's Nitto Denko controls about 90% of the global T-glass specialty fiberglass cloth market, with new production capacity not expected to come online until mid-2027 at the earliest. The chairman of Taiwanese substrate manufacturer Unimicron Technology warned on October 20 that some key materials could be short by about 20% by 2027, with delivery times for some chip substrate production equipment extending to as long as 30 months.

first_img The Dell Family Foundation plans to acquire SK Holdings by Choi Tae-won

According to the Seoul Economic Daily, citing a substantial shareholding report submitted by SK on October 13, SK Group Chairman Choi Tae-won had previously agreed to sell shares of SK Corporation, with the buyer being a fund related to Michael Dell's family, the founder of Dell Technologies. Choi Tae-won signed a contract on October 2 to sell 972,493 shares of SK Corporation's common stock, accounting for 1.34% of the total share capital, with the counterparty being DFO Public Investments, L.P., established in Delaware, USA, for an amount of 544 billion Korean won. The fund is managed by DFO Management, which manages the Dell family assets and was formerly known as MSD Capital, established by Dell in 1998, and was restructured into its current structure at the end of 2022.Choi Tae-won has signed a total agreement to sell 1,653,924 shares of SK Corporation, with a total consideration of 944 billion Korean won, to raise funds for property division with Nabi Art Center curator Ryu Soo-young. Among these, 681,431 shares, accounting for 0.94%, were sold to Korea Investment & Securities, while the remaining 1.34% was sold to the aforementioned strategic investor. SK had previously only disclosed that the buyer was a strategic investor and stated that it could not specify the details of the private transaction. For the shares sold to Korea Investment & Securities, Choi Tae-won signed a three-year equity return swap, which will settle the difference between the actual disposal price and the agreed benchmark price upon maturity, with both the gains from price increases and losses from price decreases borne by Choi Tae-won.Reports indicate that Dell Technologies is a company specializing in artificial intelligence servers and data center infrastructure, and has business dealings in semiconductors with SK Hynix.

hot_img Changxin Storage's DDR5 yield has exceeded 90%, with varying attitudes among PC manufacturers: Dell has banned it, HP has restricted it to China, while Asus and Acer have already adopted it

According to reports from Fast Technology, Changxin Memory's 17nm DDR5 chip yield has surpassed 90%, which is only about 2 percentage points lower than Samsung's same-generation products at 92% to 93%, marking a technical indicator that has entered the global first tier. Several major PC manufacturers have completed certification for Changxin DRAM chips around mid-year and have begun to incorporate them in small batches into certain laptops. The strategies adopted by different brands show significant differences: Dell has completely banned the use of Changxin chips; HP restricts their use to the mainland China market; Acer and ASUS have incorporated them into models aimed at the mainland China and emerging markets. Currently, the impact of Changxin products on the overall market prices of the three major memory giants remains limited, mainly because Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron are currently more inclined to supply LPDDR5, while Changxin's current strategic focus is on expanding DDR5 shipments. Executives from PC companies have stated that the three major manufacturers hold over 90% of the global DRAM market share, and large-scale adoption must be approached with high caution. Currently, the number and usage of models using Changxin chips are quite limited.
